Extras: For me, the best extra was the included comic book; 8 pages of illustrated porn using the characters, by artist Matt *Core. This is the kind of thing you generally collect and can’t download from pirates, enhancing it as a collectable for fans of various genres. The next best extra was the 13:12 minute long Behind the Scenes feature by Shy Kat, introducing the cast and concept. I liked the comments by costume designer Jeanne Jackson a lot but as short as it was, it was well worth watching. There was then a 21:05 minute long non-sex version of the movie, a photogallery, some trailers, the usual spam and other extras offered on a Vivid production.

Audio/Video Quality: Spider-Man XXX was presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen as shot by director Axel Braun for distribution by Vivid Entertainment. This time, Axel handled art direction, wisely placing Eli Cross in the role of videographer, Brock Landers as director of photography, employing Jeanne Jackson as costume designer, and assisting Claudia Ross and Marco Salvatore on editing. The visuals looked great with a lot of care given the green screen effects and the general art direction, the alleyways, JJ’s office, and the warehouse standing out as working in most ways on the limited budgets involved. The audio was presented in a basic 2.0 Dolby Digital with a 48 kHz sampling rate and 192 Kbps aural bitrate, the vocals clearly heard regardless of the situation. The musical interludes sounded much like the score from the recent films too, another decent attempt at providing a better aural experience than is typically the case in adult flicks, with Brenda Blossom as sound editor joined by Axel and Claudia composing the score, and Seth Cardigan as the sound technician. Overall, it was a very talented blending of audio and visual elements to stand above Axel’s previous works, the “feel” of the movie much like that of the original movies, albeit, pornified.

Body of Review: Axel Braun has been acknowledged as one of the top porn parody directors by most credible sources, his current distribution deal with Vivid Entertainment elevating their own status in the genre. Most point to his campy parody of the Batman television series as his jumping off point into the superhero field, others suggesting his tribute to Superman earlier this year solidifying his status but his biggest breakthrough to date is surely the recent Spider-Man XXX: A Porn Parody. As a fan of the multiple genres involved, I liked this one the best because rather than just mimic a work already done by Hollywood and add some barely related sex scenes to pornify it, he went the extra step with writer Mark Logan to generate a separate storyline involving the popular characters. So rather than just lamely copying a handful of existing elements to toss in and sell to the comic book fanboys, he skipped the whole origin shtick in favor of catering to those wanting something more. There were some rough edges in the process but the story involved Spiderman against Electro, a few other Marvel Universe characters tossed in including Gwen Stacy (Ash Hollywood), Mary Jane Watson (Capri Anderson), the Black Widow (Brooklyn Lee), Kingpin (Peter O’Tool), and a surprisingly effective J. Jonah Jameson (Rob Black) to hit all the right high points but leave the drudgery of retelling the whole story from scratch. The best thing is, it largely worked much, much better than usual and even set the stage for a sequel with Dr. Octopus (James Bartholet), hints of Captain America, and of course the scheming Kingpin.

I know it won’t appeal to everyone and that is just the point, cater to a broad enough audience that will appreciate the upgraded parody aspects but not the dweebs demanding purity of one particular source (especially given the upcoming mainstream reboot). The replay value, strokability, and sheer spank bank goodness included here merited a rating of Xcritic Pick for all those reasons and more, I only wished that it had a better extras package that included longer sex scenes (editor cuts or deleted footage). In short, Spider-Man XXX A Porn Parody showed that parodies do not have to be locked in step with canon sources to be good, the special effects added in enough to make the material work well in conjunction with the pornified elements, and the overall appeal certainly one worth checking out. As an aside, Xander Corvus was well suited to play the lead role, Rob Black made an inspired Jonah, and hopefully future sequels will make even better use of adding in sexual trysts where they should be rather than as randomly as so many parodies appear to place them.
