We in the industry occasionally overlook certain performers who have, undisputedly, made a huge impact on the industry, their perspective genre, or both. When it comes to BBWs, Karla Lane can best be described as the cute, younger version of her peers who also broke the rules for BBWs and paved her own way to legitimizing BBW porn. While most of the accolades go towards her contemporaries--of which very few are still around after 10 years--Karla has been a superstar since she was 18-years-old. A fresh face cutie that just stormed out of the gate, her many DVD boxcovers would go on to become best sellers. On a personal note, one could not stroll past the BBW section of an adult video store (when they still existed) and not see Karla's cherubic face and smile on literally dozens of DVD titles for Rodney Moore, West Coast Productions, Justin Slayer, The Score Group or Sensational/Plumper Pass. While she may have seemed under the radar, the truth is that Karla is a first ballot BBW Hall Of Famer who has been around long before the recent BBW explosion, of which Karla is certainly entitled to lay plenty of credit in creating.
The newly crowned AVN BBW Performer Of the Year for 2016, Karla remains a megaforce in an genre now dominated by exceptional young performers. But it was Karla who laid some of the groundwork for BBW performers today to strive and be respected members of the industry. Karla Lane is a once in a generation performer now going into her second decade, still as dominating as ever. She still has plenty more to show us.
What was your reaction when you heard your name announced as the winner of the 2016 BBW Performer Of the Year?
I wasn't even looking at the screen when my name popped up. I noticed the reaction of my friends and then looked around my shoulder to see a picture of me with the words BBW performer of the year next to them. I started crying instantly. So happy I was wearing waterproof mascara.
Has the feeling sunk in yet?
No, not really. Nothing has changed really. Maybe I'll just wake up one day and realize I actually did win.
What went through your mind after you won?
Where the nearest pizza stand was? I was starving. I went the whole day without eating because I was nervous as hell. I didn't think I was gonna win but more of losing on my birthday. I was so happy that the Hard Rock Hotel had a really good pizza joint. I had a slice with my husband then went to thank Clint Works, the owner of Plumper Pass, for sticking with me for the last 11 years.
Your birthday was also on the same night. Was this the best birthday present you could’ve possibly received ever?
Yes, it was one of the best presents I've ever received. Second best only to my two Hello Kitty Voodoo dolls. I referred to her as my daughter on social media. KJ is an avid Sports fan.
There was a little backlash about the win but tell me about the positive things that have happened to you since winning BBW POTY?
Honestly I've only focused on the positive. I've gone on a bit of a media blitz tour which is fun. The energy from my fans and fellow performers commending and celebrating with me has all been positive. I have to admit last year was a little rough for me off-screen personally, so with a "fresh start" at a new year and this already, it’s given me lots of momentum for a great year still ahead.
BBWs don’t get to accept their award and make a speech but if you could’ve, who would you have thanked for the award?
Like I said before I was so nervous and didn't have anything prepared. But since I have a moment to think about it I honestly would thank the producers and companies that worked with me. Some companies have been with me since the beginning, some are new and took a risk on me and my fellow nominees. Most of them are close personal friends of mine.
I would also have to thank my amazing husband and supportive boyfriend who have made this last year memorable in so many ways.
April Flores, the previous two-time winner of the award and you are friends. Have you two spoken since your win and what did she say to you about your win?
April was actually the first call I made that night. Her phone was off so she called me late that night when she finally received the message. Since then I publicly have appeared on her show on Vivid Radio talking about the win but we've also had our tears of joy and our long hugs. April has been one of my biggest supporters for the last two years or so and I'm grateful for her friendship.
You’ve been in the industry a decade. Would you say this was the biggest honor of your career? What have been other career highlights?
Yes, winning the AVN is like winning the Oscars of porn. The biggest honor you can give any adult performer. More of a personal highlight is the feeling I get when fellow models tell me I was an inspiration to them when they first started their careers. It means a lot knowing how I present myself on film made them comfortable enough to pursue their own career in the industry.
What big porn plans do you have for 2016?
I have a few projects I'm working on. I have some new ideas I'm trying to branch out into too like some more mainstream media as well as a possible plus size lingerie line.
What would you like to say to your fans reading this in XCritic?
Thank you for masturbating to me for the last 11 years I'm happy you're not bored of my ass yet.
