Extras: The only extra I cared for was the 5:08 minute long Behind the Scenes feature that showed very little going on behind the scenes of making the movie. The cameraman interviewed a little bit but did such a poor job of it that I was left wondering WTF?!? He couldn't even come up with any sex positions and seemed tongue tied to the point where I suspected he was a fanboy recruited at the last minute to step in. I don't mean to bag on the guy too much but I've seen some really solid efforts by the company in the past to let this one go. The credits listed the people responsible for the BTS to be Kevin Moore and Jess; my past praise of Kevin as a director made me think that perhaps he was just the cameraman this time. There were also trailers for Hustler and VCA Picture titles, a slide show, and some spam with the cover sporting a second side that displayed related titles in the series.

Audio/Video Quality: Barely Legal #80 (Blu-Ray) was presented in 1.78:1 widescreen color as shot by director Erica McLean for Hustler Video using the AVC codec; a standard on Blu-Ray discs. My limited knowledge of the SD version of the title (that looked good in anamorphic widescreen) is that it lacked the resolution and purity of fleshtones this version had, the bitrate often hovering in the mid 24 Mbps area compared to less than a third that in the SD version. The use of video bothers some folks but it suited the nature of the show far more than film would have and the contrasts were all enhanced by the high definition approach. There were no obvious compression artifacts, no grain to speak of, and even in the final scene at night, I saw no macro-blocking or other issues that pop up; thanks in no small part to the proper lighting applied here. The summation of the visuals is that they made the show look better than ever, my sole complaint being that the composition of the camera angles and editing, while good, did not seem to be the best way to enhance the looks of some of the ladies. The gals were all generically lean and youthful as the series promotes but minor flaws and blemishes did not seem to be handled as well as some of the older volumes in the series, relatively minor quibbles considering how much more resolution the new format offered up for my inspection. The audio was presented in a 2.0 DTS stereo English using a 510 Kbps bitrate at 48 kHz. The vocals on the scenes were flat and even in most cases, the voice-overs sounding somewhat warmer in tone, and the minimal music seemed to come from the stock library used for years by the series. In terms of upgrades then, the visuals got the largest boost by a wide margin with the aural capabilities once again cleaned up but only slightly (and in the BTS, I could barely hear the gals speak on many occasions).

Body of Review: Erica McLean currently works for Hustler Video as a director, having taken over for her deceased husband that shuffled off this mortal coil all too early not long ago. Since some of my friends pretty much adore her work with youthful newcomers, I don't get to see a whole lot of her works these days, the last one being Barely Legal 75th Anniversary Edition. Well, last week, I picked up a copy of a recent release in the series called Barely Legal #80 (Blu-Ray) to see how Erica and Hustler were handling the new high definition format, finding this to be a lot better than their last foray into the field in terms of technical aspects. The series itself has been around seemingly forever though, both in print and tape before DVD came onto the scene; the emphasis of each scene on the disc being a youthful lady having sex with a man in the form of a vignette as though she had written in to describe a sexual encounter. The appeal of such a formula is that it showcases gals that many viewers have not seen and elegance through simplicity has merit. While there were only five scenes in the movie, all of them had some appeal too so if you like newcomer women, you will almost certainly enjoy this one. Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

Scene One: Courtney James, the cute little gal seen on the front cover (second from the bottom on the right hand side), was up first as an artist in need of a model, settling for Anthony Rosano after he stroked her ego regarding her talent. Her long hair was alluring and she began in a loose top and shorts, coaxing his clothing off in a way only an 18 year old gal can do. He sported wood and she started sucking him off, her own clothing not lasting very long before it was his turn to reciprocate. Neither of them were the best I'd seen all week in terms of orally satisfying a partner and one of the problems with the formula is the limited amount of time given the performers to strut their stuff before the camera but it was still in good fun as the two appeared to have some fun with one another. I wished the 69 was captured more fully but the vaginal boning covered all the usual positions expected of her before the wad of population pudding went to her mouth. The pair had some minor chemistry but it was her enthusiasm that carried the day, even more than her efforts at being an active rider of cock, though I'd like to see what she is capable of when she reaches her full potential.

Scene Two: Chayse Evans, the sweet little hotty seen on the top of the right hand side of snapshots, was up next as she fantasized about the family handyman, masturbating to draw his attention. Scene Four: Kacey Jordan, the cute little bleach blond seen on the right hand side of the front cover (second from the top), was up next as she approached muscular Derrick Pierce who was sitting on an outdoor swinging bench. It was her birthday and he was a friend of her sister's, his own birthday a few days away so she wanted to give him a special treat to celebrate. In porn that translates to having sex while in real life, you get a shitty tie or aftershave that you toss out because even the giver doesn't like dollar store cologne. She had more than she could handle orally but continued to give it her best shot, Derrick fingering her as she slobbed his knob with great care. As a gentleman, he reciprocated with some obvious talent of his own, eating her out as though she tasted like candy from the looks of it. Scene Five: Tristan Kingsley, the featured cover gal with small breasts and long brunette hair, was up last as she decided to seduce her father's friend, played by a scruffy Charles Dera. Using hot chocolate as her gimmick to keep him talking, they sat outside while waiting for her father to show up, his delay in traffic allowing the pair to get better acquainted. The first physical contact came when they shared his coat on the cool night, resulting in the couple kissing and him pawing her; her silky thighs drawing his attention to the point where he started licking her biscuit. That led to her showing she was far more talented with a cock in her pussy and mouth than someone who professed moments prior that she had never even made out but this is porn and part of the concept is that you can't look too closely lest you find all sorts of problems with the action. Summary: Barely Legal #80 (Blu-Ray) by director Erica McLean for Hustler Video showed the benefits of retooling the series ever so slightly and enhancing it with some blu-ray love so I rated it as Recommended. The replay value was there, the strokability enough to justify checking the movie out, and the value if you find it on sale somewhere at a reasonable price was enough to merit your attention. I'd have liked better extras and more attention given to the aural portions of the presentation but as a trend for the series, it was a solid selection of newcomer cuties that fit the bill even if they did not all look 18 years old. In short, Barely Legal #80 (Blu-Ray) was the first release by Hustler on blu-ray that made me think they might be able to keep up with the industry leaders with only a touch more effort, despite naysayer's that have told me otherwise.
