The Movie:

That Lucky Stiff's basic plot is that a New York City elevator operator named Burt Taylor (a curley haired Randy West) finds himself on the receiving end of a bank error and winds up with his $300.00 savings turned into $300,00o,00.00. He decides to take the money and run, and heads out to do what any red blooded porn star playing an elevator operator would do – party hard and get laid… in Europe!

Chapter 1 – Candida Royale, Samantha Fox, Guy #1: Candida and the guy are enjoying a drink together, sans clothes. She starts to stroke his chest, then Samantha shows up with a glass of wine. The girls strip and take of their clothes, then his clothes and give him a rub down. They take turns sucking his dick, then he fucks each one of the pair doggy style in the garden room. The girls play with one another a little bit before he comes.

Lots of great inner city footage, including some shot of the seedy side of 42nd St., of New York from the time that this movie was made give this one an interesting look that you just can't capture anymore. There's also some really nice footage of Europe, though a lot of it looks like stock inserts. The solid cast and good performances make it worth a look, as the sex is hotter than average for the time and the interesting soundtrack and the fact that it was shot on film give it a bit of class as well (relatively speaking).

Interestingly enough, this film, directed by Chuck Vincent in 1980, features a cameo non-sex appearance from the one and only Al Goldstein, publisher of Screw magazine (look for him sitting at the bar after the end of the second sex scene watching a girl suck on a dildo and then on a guys cock).

The DVD

Video:

Now for the bad news - That Lucky Stiff is presented in a fullframe transfer sourced from a VHS tape. While the tape was at least in decent shape and the movie is watchable, the image is pretty flat and the colors are faded. There's not a lot of print damage and thankfully there are only a couple of tape rolls here and there, but those expecting the clarity of a film sourced transfer aren't going to be too stoked about the film's appearance on the DVD as the picture is quite fuzzy at times. If you're familiar with some of the more obscure adult film releases that have come out from Something Weird Video or Alpha Blue Archives, then you'll likely be okay with how the movie looks here. This transfer is also bugged with the Video X Pix logo in a few spots down in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. While the transfer is watchable and it could have been worse, it would have been nice to see this one get a proper release – however, I honestly have no idea if proper elements are even still available as a lot of the negatives and prints for this type of material for some reason seems to just disappear. If you grade this one on a curve and stack it against other, harder to find adult features of the same era, it's about on par with that level of quality.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack is a little muffled and not of the best quality, but again, it's taken from a tape source so the limitations of the older technology are going to be there when that's the case. Dialogue is pretty easy to understand, however, and the background music comes through reasonably clear. There aren't a lot of sound effects used in the film, mostly just some random moaning and groaning during the action scenes and these are handled just fine, as are the talkier bits of the movie.

Extras:

Video X Pix has provided more extras than usual on this release. First up is a trailer for Female Athletes, followed by a trailer for Slit Skirts. We've seen these promo spots on other Video X Pix discs, but they're fun none-the-less. There's also a slideshow on here consisting of a lot of the same images that were on the slideshow on their Slippery When Wet DVD. The only extra that I hadn't seen before on this release is an interview with Ron Jeremy in which he talks about working with the girls of vintage porn back in the day. Interestingly enough we get to see him play the piano in this interview as well. He talks about Lil' Oral Annie's blowjob technique, tricks of the trade, fluff girls, and sucking on his own cock. Ron's always an interesting guy to listen to, and this four minute interview proves that.,

Final Thoughts:

A good cast and a few interesting extra features make That Lucky Stiff a sound choice for those who appreciate the camp and weirdness of seventies and eighties porno. The presentation is a little lacking, but those familiar with smut from the era probably already expect that. Recommended for fans of the old stuff.
