The Movie:

This 1971 hardcore film from director Freddie Williams stars two the seventies most recognizable stars, Harry Reems and the lovely Tina Russell. When the film begins, a woman narrates as she writes in her journal but this doesn't last long and before you know it the camera is taking us on a tour of the Times Square area, zooming in on the tits and asses of pretty much every attractive woman lucky enough to walk past its leering lens. We cut to the inside of a photography studio where an attractive blonde is on a mattress with two guys. Sensuous Vixens is a pretty solid early seventies entry that delivers some nice New York City location footage and some very healthy doses of steamy sex. Tina Russell is in very fine form here, looking beautiful throughout and performing with some pretty sincere enthusiasm. Top billed Harry Reems is only in the movie for a few minutes but it's fun to see him pop here without his trademark Deep Throat moustache. Russell's narration is campy and the soundtrack, made up of some pretty familiar numbers, is fantastic. The film's biggest flaw is that the sex scenes were obviously shot without live sound and the same guy makes the same 'ooo' noises over top of each scene, regardless of how many guys actually appear in it. It's possible this was put together from a bunch of loops and that the narration was added as an afterthought to give it some sort of context, but either way, it's entertaining enough and Tina Russell's fanbase will enjoy seeing her featured prominently.

The DVD

Video:

This fullframe transfer, which appears to present the film in its original aspect ratio, looks very, very good for an old XXX film from 1971. There are some specks here and there as well as a moderate amount of grain but this looks to be a film sourced transfer and not a VHS or tape source. The colors are a bit faded and the darker scenes lose a fair bit of fine detail but aside from that, VCX has done a very good job here and amazingly enough, the feature is not bugged anywhere at all - hooray!

Sound:

The Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack, dubbed into English, is a little muffled and not of the best quality, but again, it's taken from an older source so the limitations of the era's technology are going to be there when that's the case. Dialogue, or more specifically the narration, is pretty easy to understand, however, and the background music comes through reasonably clear. There aren't a lot of sound effects used in the film, mostly just some random moaning and groaning during the action scenes and these are handled just fine, as are the talkier bits of the movie - there's nothing to complain about here.

Extras:

Four bonus scenes kick off the supplements, starting with Bad Girls II and features Ron Jeremy playing a cop who brings in a hot redhead played by Jaqueline Lorians. She lets him watch her masturbate and then they get it on. The next bonus scene is from Suzie Superstar and it stars Shauna Grant and Ron Jeremy. Final Thoughts:

Sensuous Vixens was a nice surprise. The sex is plentiful and genuinely arousing, the film is fairly well shot and it gives Tina Russell plenty of screen time to do her thing and do it well. VCX's transfer is very good and while the extras won't blow your mind, the feature more than makes up for that and this disc comes highly recommended for fans of vintage porn.
