The Movie:

An XXX-rated homage to the films of George A. Romero? Sort of. Rob Rotten's Porn Of The Dead is set sometime after a zombie plague has broken out and caused all manner of hot dead chicks and ugly zombie guys to come back to life. What happens when the guys and girls in the movie find them? They fuck them, or in some scenes get fucked by them, of course. That's really all there is to it. This one is pretty short on plot but it's at least trying something new, even if the merits of it all are completely debatable, what with the necrophilic themes and all.

Chapter 1 – Sierra Sinn And Dirty Harry: The scene starts with Harry taking what he thinks is a dead woman back to some sort of disposal facility (?) where we assume he's going to get rid of her - it looks like he might be a murderer and she his victim. The horror! She soon comes back to life and after he gets over the initial shock of it all, she sucks his cock with a voracious enthusiasm that you wouldn't expect a zombie to have. It's shot rather artistically and the background noises and intentionally degraded video give it the appearance of an old horror movie. The soundtrack, by death metal/grindcore bands Deicide, Impaled, Ex-Mortem, Decapitated, Gorerotted and Blood Red Thrown, is completely over the top and it matches the visuals in the respect even if it is kind of cheesy at times. The whole thing has been done with tongue placed firmly in cheek, which makes it more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise, and the lighting and set design is quite good as well. The problem is that all of this takes something away from the sex, which is likely the reason that most people will be watching this in the first place. There' enough heat in a few of the scenes that it's not a complete failure on that level, but it could have been sexier I suppose. But shit, this is a zombie porno, and like zombie pornos past (Joe D'Amato's Erotic Nights of The Living Dead and Porno Holocaust), it's a weird mish mash of the erotic and the morbid. It's gets enough right that it's worth a look for the curious. You'll know if you're in the target market for this kind of smut or not…

The DVD

Video:

As stated, the video is intentionally degraded here to give the feature a horror movie look, but it works. Color reproduction is very strong and there's been some obvious care put into the lighting and the shot compositions which goes a long way towards making Porn Of The Dead look very good. Some mpeg compression is evident in a few of the darker scenes but that's really the only complaint. The movie looks good on this DVD, or at least as good as it is supposed to look.

Sound:

The English language Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track is pretty good, however there are a few spots where the death metal soundtrack does bury the performers a little bit. Without much to offer in the way of dialogue this isn't as big a deal as it could have been but not hearing the moans and groans and gut munching gore effects as clearly as we might like is a minor annoyance. Otherwise, this mix is fine.

Extras:

The main supplement on this disc is a Behind The Scenes featurette that features a lot of ridiculous behind the scenes footage of the cast and crew having a blast on set with the make up and the effects tools. There is some brief, informal interview footage with some of the cast members in here, with Sierra Sinn in particular given a chance to talk about her part, but a lot of this footage is presented without much of a context to it. We see director Rob Rotten on set and working behind the camera, and getting his crew set up for specific shots. A more formal structure and some better editing could have made for a more informative and more interesting look at the making of the movie but as it stands now this is at least worth checking out as the almost hour long running time contains some nice stuff, the effects footage in particular.

Rounding out the extra features is a 'pop shot access' menu, a still gallery, a phone sex advertisement, and trailers for Black Trash 2, Bottomless Number Five, and Big And Bouncy #2.

Final Thoughts:

Rob Rotten's Porn Of The Dead is an interesting experiment that, while not completely successful, is definitely worth a look for the curious out there. Nice cinematography, a cast of reasonably attractive girls and a decent 'making of' documentary add to the package. Recommended for those who are into niche titles like this, a solid rental for everyone else.
