Synopsis

Riley Steele Chic is an extremely-well shot, seven-scene, boy/girl, and couples-friendly flick directed by Celeste, one of Digital Playground's prominent contract directors. In it, adorable Riley Steele proves that she's got what it takes to succeed in the adult biz. Indeed, the mesmerizing blue-eyed blond appears to have taken lots of lessons from her Digital Playground big sister Jesse Jane. Both Riley's red-hot moves and her newly enhanced boobs are extremely reminiscent of superstar Jesse Jane. Who could argue with Riley emulating the best?

In addition to Riley Steele, Riley Steele Chic boasts a very beautiful cast of women. I really enjoyed the appearance and performances of Zeina Heart (Scene One), Capri Cavalli (Scene Three), and Heather Vahn (Scene Six). Devi Emmerson (Scene 4) is cute, but her solo scene goes nowhere.

Before writing another word, I want to make it clear that I am being critical of this movie only because I respect its director, Celeste, so much. Even though I'm criticizing this release from an aesthetic perspective, its production values are head-and-shoulders better than most movies released by most studios. However, I don't think it is up to Celeste's own personal standards.

Since the beginning of her directorial career, Celeste has been one of my favorite directors. I reviewed her first movie, The Story of J, and noted: "The Story of J is one of the most intriguing and erotic visual experiences in which I've had the pleasure to partake in perhaps eight to ten years. It marks the directorial debut of veteran pornstar Celeste (Bunny Luv) who may become, if this movie is a valid predictor, one of the most inspired directors in adult movies. Drawing heavily from the work of Michael Ninn (if you ever saw Sex, Sex 2, Latex or Shock you'll know what I mean--just look at the antique TV set pictured on the boxcover!), Celeste weaves a compelling and completely lucid tale without using one word!" I went on to applaud Celeste's creativity, her attention to detail, her use of extremely well-chosen music and props to tell her tale, and her aesthetic prowess.

Sadly, if Riley Steele Chic is any indicator, Celeste has lost some of her spark. Although the movie still shows her devotion to detail and highlights the videographic proficiency of Robby D., it is not creative...at all! In fact, it's rather trite. There's no story; there's a theme, but it is not fully developed by the sex scenes. There's music during the brief scene set-ups, but it is predictable and doesn't support the on-screen action or tell any sort of story. In short, although Riley Steele Chic was extremely well captured and edited, the movie is ordinary rather than extraordinary; mundane instead of memorable; porn for the buck, rather than for the art. It's below Celeste's capability!

One of the most disheartening aspects of Riley Steele Chic is the noteworthy lack of any coherent and developed theme. Let's start with the movie's title, Chic. Microsoft's internal dictionary defines this word as "fashionable style and elegance." Synonyms include: stylish, fashionable, well-dressed, attractive, elegant, well-groomed, modish, and well put together." Given this movie's name, I truly expected Riley Steele to appear in--and strip out of--fashionable and elegant attire. Not so, unless you count tattered blue jeans or ordinary bikinis as "stylish." "Chic" also means well groomed. Again, not so. Pubic-area stubble and pimple-covered buttocks are more the norm in this movie than excellent grooming.

I also expected some sort of story line related to Riley's style. Interestingly, a bit of such a theme does emerge prior to the first and fourth scenes...but is elsewhere absent. Two girls, Riley (prior to Scene One) and Devi Emmerson (prior to Scene Four) pose for a lecherous photographer who, in addition to snapping fashion shots, tries to coax the girls out of their clothes. Riley resists, but Devi strips and half-heartedly touches herself (calling it "masturbating" would be a stretch) for a few seconds before the action cuts to Scene Five. However, neither one of these scenarios develops into a sex scene. After Riley's refusal to strip for the camera, the video cuts to another totally unrelated girl (Zeina Heart) who is already (without introduction) enjoying foreplay with James Deen. Similarly, Devi's pre-empted masturbation scene leads to, well, nothing related to Devi. Instead, the video cuts to Riley and Danny Mountain making out.

Riley Steele Chic would have been a great movie had Celeste followed through on the theme she introduced at the beginning--in which Riley resists the photographer's sexual requests--and had Riley's inhibitions dissolve little-by-little as she posed for increasingly-erotic photo shoots. Maybe her first scene could have been masturbation; second girl/girl; and third boy/girl. If the movie had progressed along those lines, then Riley Steele Chic would be a worthy Celeste opus. As is stands, however, Riley Steele Chic is humdrum and feels like an amalgamation of unrelated scenes.

Bottom line? If you like Riley Steele (and who wouldn't) rent this movie to catch her very watchable scenes as well as the other delectable girls featured in Riley Steele Chic. But, the movie isn't a keeper.

The DVD-9 disc that I reviewed contains a full-motion chapter selector, multiple chapters per scene, a four-minute slide show accompanied by music, a manually controlled photo gallery (same images as the slide show), trailers for eight Digital Playground releases, and a 10-minute behind-the-scenes featurette (BTS). The BTS primarily highlights Digital Playground's contract girl Riley Chic (but also devotes some time to the other girls, too) and includes impromptu interviews, funny behind-the-camera looks at the taping of the movie, close-up video of the girls' fine mostly-naked bodies, off-camera tomfoolery, bloopers, and still photo shoot video. This selection of Extras is slightly below average in today's marketplace. Two and one-half stars.

Final Thoughts

The best things about Riley Steele Chic include:

• Riley Steele. She is definitely beoming a world-class performer and her moves are becoming hotter and hotter every time I see her in action.
• Capri Cavalli, Heather Vahn, and Zeina Heart. All these girls are extremely attractive--each in her own way. Together, they make up a dream female cast.
• the location(s) and sets. The home (there may have been more than one) used as a location is very attractive with very nice wood floors. The location is a bit stark in that there's not a lot of furniture in some rooms. But, what furniture there is is very functional and appealing. Of particular note are the huge glass windows overlooking scenic Southern California locations. And, the mirrored bathroom used in Scene Six is very nice, too.

Riley Steele Chic could have been better if:

• a strong theme would have been used to consistently tie together the seemingly-unrelated scenes.
• the scene setups had been more developed and had been more directly related to the sex that follows.

Things I didn't like about Riley Steele Chic include:

• Tony DeSergio never went down on Capri Cavalli's pussy to eat it during Scene Three. For the life of me, I cannot understand men who neglect cunnilingus during sex!
