The Movie:

"Hollywood has The Exorcist, porn has Angel Above And The Devil Below." So says the packaging on the back of this VCX/Cal Vista Classic DVD release at least, and it's not an unfair comparison to make, really, as this 1975 effort from director Dominic Bolla (likely a pseudonym as he has no other credits to his name) was obviously influenced by the success of William Friedkin's box office smash made just prior.

The film tells the story of a teenage girl named Randy (Linda York) who lies in bed one night reading 'The Necronomicon' (the packaging puzzlingly describes this as an 'erotic book') while her mother and the handyman, played by Robert Bedford and curvy brunette Starlyn Simone, get it on rather loudly in the next room. Bedford, sporting a nice 'BOB' tattoo on his arm, eats Simone out and then she gives him head. He gets on top of her and fucks her missionary style and then she rides him cowgirl style. All the while Randy is fingering herself and then fucking herself with a black candle. As Randy climaxes, the devil himself (Lamar Gilbert according to the credits) appears at the foot of her bed wearing a black rimmed hat and looking kind of like Robert Mitchum in The Night Of The Hunter. The devil fingers Randy and wants to have sex with her. A tarot card moves mysteriously down her sleeping body under its own power but when she awakens from her trance-like sleep, ol' scatch is gone. Mom and the handyman are still going at it, however, so Randy gets back to fingering herself. The devil appears again, telling her what a great piece of ass she is and asking her to taste his cock but she's not interested despite his ongoing pleas asking her to fuck him, telling her 'you must, you invoked me.' That's what you get for reading evil books and masturbating, kids. Let that be a lesson to you. At any rate, the devil curses Randy's cunt, literally, telling her that 'your lust hole will be my home' and laughing manically before disappearing into the darkness from whence he came.

The next morning, Randy wakes up and all seems normal. She talks to her mom about her weird dream, and mom tells her that George, the handyman, is coming to work on the sink. Mom heads downtown to run some errands and leaves Randy by herself in the house. She heads to the bathroom to shower and notices that her pussy starts talking to her. George shows up and walks in on her and Randy's possessed poon decides it wants a piece of him but it's time for school. Randy heads to class but heads home afterwards and we see her in bed for the night. George shows up again and has his way with her. She resists at first but once she's turned on, she gives in. The doctor is down with this idea and so he takes off his glasses, puts on a bib (!!) and eats her out but soon after he's start mom comes into the room and puts a stop to it. The doctor leaves and mom decides to read a nudie magazine. Randy comes downstairs and the two talk about sex, and then she introduces her to Nurse Prudence (Rene Bond appearing as Mindy Brandt). Mom explains the situation to the nurse and then answers the door, where a politician named Lucious Watergag (Walt Davis credited as Trickey Nicky) is at the door. The nurse takes Randy upstairs while mom has Lucious in for a drink. Mom bends over and Lucious fucks her from behind, though mom is pretty bored by this, smoking a cigar as he fucks her. Upstairs the nurse and Randy are not getting along. Randy comes downstairs, naked, grunting obscenities at Lucious, who wisely flees the house.

Mom calls in the help of a specialist named Dr. Wanker (Nimrod Sappho), who decides to consult privately with the patient without mom's interference. They talk, Randy acts up, soon enough the good doctor has his cock out. She gives him head while he slips a vibrator into her snatch but her pussy shoots it out and into the wall while Randy chomps down on the doctor's cock. The doctor calls the nurse in for help and Randy eventually releases him from her mouth and laughs. Dr. Wanker tells mom that Randy is evil and that only God can help her now.

A priest (John Barnum) and his brother (Robbie Roberson) show up at the door and offer their help to her, so mom invites them in to see if there's anything they can do for her possessed daughter, who is bound to the chair with tape over her pussy to stop it from talking. The priest tells her that she needs understanding and undoes her binds. Meanwhile, George the handyman has shown up. He ties the nurse to the table and gags her before cutting off her dress with scissors, taking down her pantyhose and spreading her legs. He plays with her tits and then has a beer while he eats her out. He climbs on top of her and sucks her tits while he fucks her.

Meanwhile, the priest's brother and Randy's mother are hanging out downstairs looking at pictures. After they talk, he heads upstairs where Randy has the priest on the floor and is growling like a lion. She assaults the brother and rips off his clothes, thrashing him against the wall and pulling him to the bed. The movie is pretty much a blatant rip off of The Exorcist, tough oddly enough the 'talking pussy' motif was also used the same year across the pond in a French XXX movie called Pussy Talk (or, if you prefer, La Sexe Qui Parle) directed by Claude Mulot (known to many cult horror enthusiasts as the man who gave us The Blood Rose). In addition to the surreal make up applied to 'the devil' it's also pretty cool how the opening credits appear in the book that York reads under the covers during the film's incredible opening. Throw in a few other odd seventies touches, such as strange 'pop' posters on the walls, a gratuitous Miller High Life cameo, strange music, cheap tattoos and superfluous amounts of body hair and you've got an interesting cinematic oddity well worth a watch. The sex scenes are fairly brief and not nearly as graphic as most smut of the era, but there's no mistaking the hardcore action when it occurs. While this might not be much of a turn on in the traditional sense, it's still a fun movie, particularly if you appreciate the countless knock offs of The Exorcist that the seventies shat out or just enjoy a goofy supernatural horror film now and again.

The DVD

Video:

This fullframe transfer, which appears to present the film in its original aspect ratio, looks surprisingly sharp and colorful and the picture quality, for an old XXX film from 1975, looks surprisingly good. There are some specks here and there as well as a moderate amount of grain but this looks to be a film sourced transfer and not a VHS or tape source. The unfortunate decision to add a 'Copyright VCX 2008' bug in the bottom of the image during a few key scenes is also a strike against the disc, as it is a little annoying when it continues to pop up (it rears its ugly head at least four times), but other than that, the black levels stay strong, the skin tones look natural, and while there are a few scenes that look a bit on the soft side, overall this is a nice picture, even if the transfer is interlaced.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack is a little muffled and not of the best quality, but again, it's taken from an older source so the limitations of the era's technology are going to be there when that's the case. Dialogue is pretty easy to understand, however, and the background music comes through reasonably clear. There aren't a lot of sound effects used in the film, mostly just some random moaning and groaning during the action scenes and these are handled just fine, as are the talkier bits of the movie.

Extras:

Aside from some tacky animated menus, VCX has included three bonus scenes, the first of which is from Dear Fanny (7:03) and features Amber Lynn and R. Bolla. Basically, Bolla fucks her from behind for a few minutes and she finishes him off with a blowjob. The second scene is from Sex The Hard Way (8:18) and it stars Penny Morgan and Peter North. They make out at a horserace track, she gives him head, and he blows his load all over her face. The last bonus scene is from Three Faces Of Angel (11:31) and it features Angel and R. Bolla again. Angel enters Bolla's swanky apartment, he seduces her and then fingers her and eats her out. They move into a sixty-nine and then she sits on his face for a bit before she blows him and lets him fuck her missionary style. She finishes him off with a blow job.

Final Thoughts:

Angel Above And The Devil Below may not be the steamiest XXX porno made in the seventies but it sure is a lot of good, goofy fun. It features some pretty trippy visuals, a few fun performances, and Rene Bond's immortally perfect breasts all set to a quirky soundtrack and featuring some of the most inane dialogue ever recorded. VCX's DVD is light on extras but it looks and sounds pretty decent, making this one a solid recommendation for classic smut fans.
