The Movie:

Directed by John Christopher (who classic smut fans will know has a few decent titles in his filmography like Inside Georgina Spelvin and Hot Child In The City among others) in 1978 for Jack Rabbit Productions, Pussycat Ranch starts off with a pretty great theme song that 'talks about the girls of the Pussycat Ranch, who'll give you a real fine time if you give them just half a chance' that plays over top of footage of the female cast riding topless through a field. From there we meet John Boy (Shaun Costello regular Roger Caine) and an older woman called Ma (Molly Malone). John Boy has no work, so he's itching to leave but she convinces him to say goodbye to the girls before he goes. He heads into the barn where Daisey Mae, Heather Young and Samantha Fox are discussing their mutual horniness. He's the right man in the right place at the right time and before you know it they're literally going for a roll in the hay. Caine gets naked and the girls take over, licking and sucking him and riding him while sucking on one another's tits until he squirts his load.

From there, we see an evil banker show up and ask Ma for the mortgage money. She doesn't have it and he insists he'll have to marry her. The three girls walk in and put a stop to things before they get out of hand. He decides to give them all one more day to come up with the money. Meanwhile, two cowboys played by Joey Silvera (as Snake) and Eric Edwards (as Billy The Kid), decide to go find some girls while some Ennio Morricone music plays on the soundtrack. Eric Edwards comes to a house where he finds Arcadia Lake. They make out, some disco music swells up on the soundtrack, and he sucks her tits and eats her out. She gives him head and then he fucks her missionary style and then from behind until he finishes. While this is going on, Silvera is outside practicing his gun play to more Morricone music. He doesn't see the banker head inside...

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the girls are bandying about more ideas on how to get money. They decide to rob a bank and head out to try their luck. When they leave, Snake and Billy The Kid show up and have some words with John Boy. Eventually they all get drunk together and lament the fact that there are no broads around here. We also learn that Billy and Snake have just come from robbing the bank the girls are out to rob. The luck! Eventually they get back to the house and Eric Edwards, Heather Young, Roger Caine, and Samantha Fox have an orgy. Daisey Mae and Joey Silvera go at it as a twosome in another room. The western music turns to disco again. All three guys blow their loads onto their respective female partners after a fair bit of pumping.

The girls bitch and moan some more about not having the money and figure they're going to lose their ranch. More Morricone is on the soundtrack, as the guys figure that maybe they can work out some sort of deal with the girls. Meanwhile, the Sheriff, played by Don Peterson, is in a bedroom with Samantha Fox who is all too keen to take advantage of him. She gets naked and gives him a pretty fantastic blowjob before riding him cowgirl style. They sixty-nine for a few until they're both more than happy with the results.

After the guys decide to hang out a bit at the ranch some more, Daisey Mae takes a laywer played by R. Bolla upstairs and they strip. They hop into bed and sixty-nine and then fuck missionary style. Once that fucking and sucking is over with the film rushes to a conclusion where Billy decides to take it upon himself to deal with evil banker and solve the girls' problems for good. Plenty more Morricone music is swiped and everyone lives happily ever after.

Not particularly sexy and probably slightly below the erotic standards that genre held itself to at the time, The Pussycat Ranch won't appease those looking for porn specifically. If you dig on bad old cult movies with stolen soundtracks, bad dialogue, wooden acting and goofy premises, the film delivers and on that level it's worth seeing but the hilarity found in the film is mostly of the unintentional variety. Take that for what you will.

The DVD

Video:

This fullframe transfer, which appears to present the film in its original aspect ratio, looks surprisingly sharp and colorful, if a bit faded, even if it is interlaced. The picture quality, for an old XXX film from 1978, looks surprisingly good. There are some specks here and there as well as a moderate amount of grain but this looks to be a film sourced transfer and not a VHS or tape source. The black levels stay strong, the skin tones look natural, and while there are a few scenes that look a bit on the soft side in addition to come mild compression artifacts noticeable in the blacks, overall this is a nice picture. A 'Copyright 2009 VCX' but does appear a few times at the bottom of the screen throughout the movie. This is VCX's method of protecting their properties, so it's understandable that it appears, but it's bound to annoy some purists.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack is a little muffled and not of the best quality, but again, it's taken from an older source so the limitations of the era's technology are going to be there when that's the case. Dialogue is pretty easy to understand, however, and the background music comes through reasonably clear. There aren't a lot of sound effects used in the film, mostly just some random moaning and groaning during the action scenes and these are handled just fine, as are the talkier bits of the movie. Surprisingly enough, this DVD also features a Spanish language dub. The dubbing doesn't always match the lips of the actors but more often than not it comes close. While you probably won't want to watch it this way (unless you only speak Spanish), it's cool to see it included here.

Extras:

Aside from some tacky animated menus, VCX has included four bonus scenes, the first of which is from Private Moments (6:10) and in it Peter North fucks a brunette in the bathroom of a fancy restaurant while all their friends wait outside. The second clip is from Beverly Hills Wives (13:51) that features Amber Lynn hanging out in a bedroom with David Cannon. He plays with her tits and eats her pussy and then she gives him a very professional looking blowjob. Amber knew what she was doing and it shows. She hops on top, still wearing her heels, to ride him cowgirl style and then he fucks her missionary style for a few minutes before flipping her over and taking her from behind and then spooning her. Final Thoughts:

Goofy but entertaining enough, The Pussycat Ranch is a fun time killer but a bit overlong and not very good as pornography even if it is entertaining. VCX's presentation is okay, it's watchable enough even if it's not been given much of a restoration, but this is one for the cult movie buff more than for the porno movie fan. Rent it.
