Overview: Porn directors need guts to release a DVD these days that’s over four hours in length. You either believe it will be epic or what you shot was so good the audience will stick around for the DVD’s entirety. Jonni is one of my favorite directors. He gets great shots, casts great girls in his films, and he is somehow able to get the best out of his performers. His “ . . . . For . . .” series centers on a girl that hasn’t quite reached superstar status but damn well deserve to be there. As a journalist it kills me that there are so many great performers, like London Keyes, that haven’t been given their respect until now. L For London is not flawless. There are several things, mainly personal, that I didn’t enjoy about this film. But over the years I’ve come to realize that what I do or don’t like, there are many who feel the same way. However, Darkko does capture the essence of this remarkable lady who manages to give her best performances to date. A turning point in London’s career—yes. Was this the one of the best films in Darkko’s stellar career—no.

Summary: Instead of giving a scene by scene breakdown, the best way to review this title would be to discuss some of the film’s finer points but I feel it necessary to also discuss its negative points as well. So here are my major issues with this film.

One, too much saliva. Spit turns on many people, not me. It reaches the point where it’s not even gross anymore, it’s just dull to watch London and her partners swapping spit into each other’s mouth and all over their bodies over and over and over again.

Two, the lack of real lesbian sex. I loved the way the film began, with Asa and London sucking on each other’s tits but besides sucking tits and tongue swapping, there’s not much in the way of pussy eating. Same with Jayden Jaymes and Mia Lelani. While each scene did have great moments—watching Jayden and London inserting their tongues and toys up each other’s asses was indeed the films ultimate strokable moment—again, not a lot of other lesbian stuff going on like eating pussy, titty sucking, you name it, it was lacking in that department.

Three, the blowbangs. I understand lots of guys dig blowbangs. I’m not much of a blowbang fan but I’ll watch a decent one in the middle of DVD. Actually, the blowbang that begins disc two is a better than decent one; at least London got toally naked and even got banged at one point. Starting the disc with her in the pool wearing just a bikini was a nice touch. But there was no need for the mini blowbang in disc one. Two blowbangs in one film is overkill. Plus the POV BJ scene featuring her and Jonni in disc one again wasn’t necessary since they appear together again (in another POV BJ scene) at the end of disc two. Why was it necessary to show a clone of the first scene a second time around? My suggestion—let London shine on her own and make one of those scenes a solo masturbation scene; maybe even letting her talk. There was no behind the scenes footage at all, no explanation as to why London was picked, why she was there, her thoughts, no dialogue whatsoever. That’s number four.

Five, unless you count the anal in London’s lesbian romps, scene one had the only anal scene in the entire DVD. I guess I heard wrong but there is no DP. Very disappointed at the lack of anal. Yes, it’s a big deal that it’s her first anal scene but couldn’t there have been more? I felt mislead, thinking there was more anal in this film the way it was promoted.

Six, the length. Less is more and at just over four hours, there is just too much footage that could’ve been left on the cutting room floor. Three hours would’ve been perfectly fine. I stayed with it because it’s my job and that’s how it felt like, a job when watching porn should be fun.

I can hear it now, “What do you know? You’re just a critic. You can’t direct a film. Who are you to criticize an artist’s work?” I can’t direct a film but I’ve been around long enough and have watched enough porn to know that even the best ones have an occasional off day. Not everything I do or anyone else is great all the time. Most critics will probably give this title rave reviews without even watching the entire film because it’s Evil Angel and they do advertise a lot in the trades (which, let’s not deny this open secret, has a lot to do with scoring nominations come awards season). But I cannot in good conscious do that. There are lots of great moments here that have earned L For London a Recommended review. London is just too good a performer and she really shines throughout the DVD. It would be criminal not to give London her props. Darkko is still one of the best adult directors around and I’ll continue to be a fan. L For London has a lot going for it but in the end, the positives don’t really outweigh the negatives by much.
