OVERVIEW

Momentum, Vol. 2 continues in the four-episode, ‘70s porn appreciation film series shot by Australia’s LightSouthern Cinema between 2015-2016. This film is humorous in its plot, yet frighteningly taut in its energy in a way that creates a unique juxtaposition of styles and vibes. The beautiful and period-specific set design and shooting style recall finely detailed grindhouse flicks of the 1970s like Last House on the Left. However, the prevailing presence of randy sex allows the film to eventually veer head-long into an enjoyable journey into paint-by-numbers, masturbatory, hetero, and homosexual eye candy. As a series, Momentum’s satisfies‘70s porn aficionados by being both a classic homage, yet still reflective of being created within the modern independent art-house aesthetic.

Scene 1: Chloe B

The film opens with Chloe B, on her trademark roller skates, entering her den. The modestly appointed home of buxom, teardrop-breasted starlet Madison Missina is Chloe’s first -- and clearly favorite -- stop. Fascinatingly, on her wall are the poster for the early '70s porn epics A History of the Blue Movie, and Sex of All Nations. Research regarding this film notes that the tagline for Sex of All Nations' Australian premiere read: “For two years they filmed sex acts around the World. The normal, the abnormal, the forbidden, the primitive. A world of sex you have never seen.” Does anything even approximate to this occur in Momentum, Vol. 2? No. But having the poster on the wall is a great touch that gives Missina’s boudoir a sense of foreboding, grindhouse appeal. However, like so many times in this film, it is in using sex as a tool to deliver on developing that anticipation that the movie wins.

Aside from delivering newspapers, Chloe’s an orgasm-obsessed peeping tom. After checking in on Madison’s boyfriend -- and Chloe’s second paper delivery spot -- Rob Paulson, she camps in the tall grass outside of his bathroom window where the balding, fit Paulson is washing his ever so slightly hairy body in the shower. As soon as he arrives, there’s Chloe creeping up on her bicycle seconds later, intrigued by the likelihood of the sexual tryst between them to follow. The inexplicableness of Chloe’s arrival so soon after Rob’s is entertaining in the sense that, like ‘70s porn, it’s absurd. It’s so absurd that it disrupts any other dramatic narrative or other theme being developed. It keeps the driving force of the film’s dramatic action wholly focused on the sex.

Madison Missina’s blond hair is pinned in hair rollers, plus she’s wearing an open white men’s cut dress shirt and high-waisted, rainbow-print knickers. Comparatively, Rob Paulson being clad in a green plaid shirt and red jogging shorts is not as era-specific, but it’s certainly form-flattering. Paulson atones for his fashion faux pas with an oral sex performance par excellence. He grabs Missina’s hips and seemingly rotates her into his tongue. It’s a skill that this reviewer has never seen attempted, thus making it one that certainly is a call to rewind the moment in the film where it occurs.
