Extras: The only extra I cared for was the 5:27 minute long Behind the Scenes feature that showed very little going on behind the scenes of making the movie. It jumped around a bit and it was clear that being brand new to porn was not a requirement (not to mention that Erica feeds the talent better than most companies). There were also trailers for Hustler and VCA Picture titles, a slide show, and some spam with the cover sporting a second side that displayed related titles in the series.

Audio/Video Quality: Barely Legal #80 (Blu-Ray) was presented in 1.78:1 widescreen color as shot by director Erica McLean for Hustler Video using the AVC codec; a standard on Blu-Ray discs. My limited knowledge of the SD version of the title (that looked good in anamorphic widescreen from what I'm told) is that it lacked the resolution and purity of fleshtones this version had, the bitrate often hovering in the mid 29 Mbps area compared to less than a third that in the SD version. The use of video bothers some folks but it suited the nature of the show far more than film would have and the contrasts were all enhanced by the high definition approach. There were no obvious compression artifacts, no grain to speak of, and even in the final scene at night, I saw no macro-blocking or other issues that pop up; thanks in no small part to the proper lighting applied here. The summation of the visuals is that they made the show look better than ever, my sole complaint being that the composition of the camera angles and editing, while good, did not seem to be the best way to enhance the looks of some of the ladies. The gals were all generically lean and youthful as the series promotes but minor flaws and blemishes did not seem to be handled as well as some of the older volumes in the series, relatively minor quibbles considering how much more resolution the new format offered up for my inspection. The audio was presented in a 2.0 DTS stereo English using a 224 Kbps bitrate at 48 kHz. The vocals on the scenes were flat and even in most cases, the voice-overs sounding somewhat warmer in tone, and the minimal music seemed to come from the stock library used for years by the series. In terms of upgrades then, the visuals got the largest boost by a wide margin with the aural capabilities once again cleaned up but only slightly (and in the BTS, I could barely hear the gals speak on occasion).

Body of Review: Erica McLean currently works for Hustler Video as a director, having taken over for her deceased husband that shuffled off this mortal coil all too early not long ago. Since some of my friends pretty much adore her work with youthful newcomers, I don't get to see a whole lot of her works these days, the last one in standard definition being Barely Legal 75th Anniversary Edition and then the more recent Barely Legal #80 (Blu-Ray) to see how Erica and Hustler were handling the new high definition format. Now, Hustler is showing their commitment to the newer format with Barely Legal 83, providing the latest crop of youthful hotties for fans to appreciate. The series itself has been around seemingly forever though, both in print and tape before DVD came onto the scene; the emphasis of each scene on the disc being a youthful lady having sex with a man in the form of a vignette as though she had written in to describe a sexual encounter. The appeal of such a formula is that it showcases gals that many viewers have not seen and elegance through simplicity has merit. While there were only five scenes in the movie, all of them had some appeal too so if you like newcomer women, you will almost certainly enjoy this one. Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

Scene One: Jaelyn Fox, the all natural cutie seen on the upper left hand corner of the front DVD case cover, was up first as she expounded about her crush on a guy her father hired; masturbating to gain his attention. Summary: Barely Legal #83 (Blu-Ray) by director Erica McLean for Hustler Video showed the benefits of retooling the series ever so slightly and enhancing it with some blu-ray love so I rated it as Recommended. The replay value was there, the strokability enough to justify checking the movie out, and the value if you find it on sale somewhere at a reasonable price was enough to merit your attention. I'd have liked better extras and more attention given to the aural portions of the presentation but as a trend for the series, it was a solid selection of newcomer cuties that fit the bill even if they did not all look 18 years old. In short, Barely Legal #83 (Blu-Ray) was the second release by Hustler on blu-ray that made me think they might be able to keep up with the industry leaders with only a touch more effort, despite naysayer's that have told me otherwise thanks to their initial efforts. At this writing, there are few companies poised to dominate the high definition field so Hustler can reclaim it's place as an industry leader if it likes, I just wish they'd offer better extras and more fuck for the buck like their magazine was known for doing back in the 70's and 80's.
