The Movie:

The set up for Vena Virago's latest endeavor starts when Page Morgan gets a hold of a fanzine that talks about the life and art of the director. Page becomes obsessed with her work and with rabbits and begins what can only be described as a psychedelic sexual road trip of self discovery and sexual awakening. It's all very odd and it is as much a performance art piece as a porno movie but Virago makes it work as some sort of odd XXX counter culture statement though what exactly it is that she's saying isn't entirely clear.

That said, this one is really easy to enjoy as a quirky and very sexy slice of pop art and taken on that level the movie is a lot of fun. There's a definite sense of humor to all of this and a great sense of style and composition throughout the film that lends it a very unique visual flair which goes a long way towards its success. Equally important, the sex scenes are well shot, well cast, well choreographed and genuinely sexy.

Here's how it all goes down:

Scene 1 - Max Mikita And Jordan Ash: When this scene starts, Max is painting in her room. Jordan comes into the frame and cuffs her with some leather bondage gear around her arms. He yanks her pants down and eats her out from behind and then flips her over for more of the same. Max's head is shaved, but her box is not. Honey Bunny is presented in a nice 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that effectively portrays the gritty, dirty look of the world where the movie is supposed to take place. The colors have been intentionally muted in much of the film so don't expect it to pop off the screen at you, it's all rather dreary looking but again, this works in the context of the movie. There aren't any problems with compression artifacts or edge enhancement which is nice and as drab as the picture can be, at least its clean and well authored.

Sound:

The English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track here is very good. The dialogue is easy enough to follow and the soundtrack is mixed in very nicely. A 5.l track might have added some more atmosphere but the 2.0 track that is here is well balanced and of nice clarity and quality.

Extras:

The biggest extra on this release is a Behind The Scenes (12:50) featurette that takes a look at the production while it was being shot. We see some of the performers blocking their scenes and acting out dialogue bits in front of a green screen and we get to see director Vena Virago doing her thing. We see characters relaxing behind the set and we see some of the girls getting their make up applied before their scenes start. We also get a look at some of the pre-production art and some of the editing. Eon McKai and Winkytiki pop up at one point as well.

Rounding out the extra features are trailers for a few other Vivid Alt productions, a video art gallery, a still photo gallery, animated menus and chapter selection.

Final Thoughts:

Honey Bunny is a candy coated whirlwind of sex and surrealism. It's an interesting film that won't be for all tastes but those who don't mind some eclectic visuals with their gynecological close ups ought to give it a look, just for something different. Recommended.
