The Movie:

The latest feature from prolific and popular adult feature director Paul Thomas is his first for Hustler and the first feature he’s made for someone other than Vivid, the studio that’s been his home for years now. The story is split up into two parts, with the first centering around Otto Bauer as a voyeur who eventually decides to stop playing as a spectator and to try his luck as a participant. The second follows Eric Swiss who is in counseling for various reasons and who ends up forming a bizarre relationship with this psychiatrist.

Like the best of Thomas’ earlier features, this movie has a story that compliments the sex and features sex that compliments the story. The acting is strong by adult feature standards with Bauer giving a particularly convincing performance, and the production values are up to the director’s usual standards. Things are a bit darker this time around, however. Thomas has gone into dark territory before in his career, but with Pervert things definitely take a more psychologically twisted route than most of his other work. It comes together well and the end result proves why Thomas is one of the best in the industry – he’s able to make interesting and frequently intelligent sex films, rather than plain old stroke films.

The five scenes that make up the bulk of Pervert are as follows:

Scene 1 – Lily Labeau And Derrick Pierce: Lizzy brings voyeur Otto into the men’s room where Derrick is relieving himself. This shot on video production looks pretty clean presented here in a reasonably stable 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen presentation. There is some mild edge enhancement in a couple of spots and a noticeable bit of mpeg compression evident in some of the darker colors and the blacks but other than that, there's not a lot to complain about. Skin tones look nice and natural, the compositions are dead on, and aside from the fact that this digital video production looks like a digital video production and as such suffers from the minor defects usually associated with the format, everything is coming up roses as far as the look of the film is concerned.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track is quite sufficient. The dialogue comes through cleanly and clearly as do all of the moans and groans. The soundtrack is mixed in properly at a respectable level most of them time but there are a few spots where the music is definitely louder than it needed to be and as such it slightly overshadows the speaking parts when they do occur. Bass response is nice and lively and overall, for a porno movie, this is a better than average effort.

Extras:

The extras on this disc are rather disappointing, with only a few trailers for other unrelated Hustler products and a still gallery hidden underneath the animated menus and chapter stops typically found on any DVD these days.

Final Thoughts:

Despite the glaring lack of extra features, this is otherwise a very good presentation of a very good movie. Thomas manages to tell an interesting story without overshadowing the heat that the sex scenes need to work, and the end result is a fairly engrossing psychologically twisted drama that offers up some enjoyably kinky sex and some father unrestrained passion. A good film for couples or anyone who has enjoyed Thomas’ previous features. Recommended.
