I was just thinking to myself the other day "How can I have the perfect orgy?" And surely enough in came the title to the latest instructional guide with Nina Hartley on how to have the perfect orgy. See, I always thought it was as simple as having a lot of people intermingling and fucking, but surely enough Nina Hartley feels two hours of instructions on assembling the perfect orgy is necessary. Hey, who am I to argue with the legendary Nina Hartley? She could make a DVD about origami, and I'd still pony up twenty bucks if she was dressed in lingerie. She's still a smoking hot titan of a porn star, she is. Hartley's film strictly seeks to educate, and the sexual education guru that she is, she and Kylie Ireland really just state the obvious at times.
Be sure you want to be in an orgy.
A lot of people makes a better orgy.
People who take part in orgies don't always have sex.
A lot of people makes a better orgy.
That's really the extent upon which the information given conveys to the audience, and couples really seeking an orgy really won't get too much information out of this, and I gather many will still be hesitant. There are just too many guidelines for the orgy to be openly accessible, and I found Hartley often contradicting herself. Only have orgies if you're a couple, don't have orgies if you're unhappy, happy, or seeking random fucking. So... where's the middle ground in that? I couldn't really fathom it, and in all honesty, even though Hartley's educational DVD is an interesting instructional guide, it really doesn't clarify what Hartley's intent is and fogs up the concept of the orgy into an incredibly complicated pursuit until it will just seem unappealing. Further adding to the clusterfuck she instructs you not to invite couples you're intimately friendly with, couples you don't know, and couples who don't get along with one another. So, where's the middle ground in that?
But on the upside there are some insightful albeit obvious suggestions such as keeping your place clean, opening a wide area for the group, and keeping snacks nearby, because if I'm eating a girl out the first thing I want to have when I surface is the doritos. I jest, but Hartley isn't some porn star attempting to look intelligent. She's well spoken and comfortable, and it doesn't hurt that she and Kylie Ireland are fun to look at while they speak, and the most important fact they offer is the asking of permission before engaging in sexual activities with a party goer, which is just good manners. I'll keep that in mind with my next orgy.
Interestingly enough though the etiquette for an orgy party really can be applied to an average party (sans the clitoral shaving), so really this instructional DVD is not so much a demonstration of perfect orgies and suggested methods on orgy bunches, but on etiquette and environment involving orgy parties and what not to do. The orgy demonstrations are rather sexy as Nina displays the mini-orgy and challenges us to point out which actions they're using that she explained to us, as well as inevitably being pulled in and sampling the guests for herself. Hell at one point even Kylie Ireland gets in on the proceedings with a three girl on girl orgy, which inevitably leads to an all out pile of bodies pretty much adding the pep to the lecture.
All in all, I'm honestly not such a fan of instructional videos and in spite of Hartley's charisma, and the sexy demonstrations, this production is strictly a Rent it, property that serves a great purpose in spite of the caveats.
Audio/Visuals:
The video for the DVD is great as it's often very sharp and filmed in wide-screen. The dark colors come off very soft as an obvious way to make the DVD feel more intimate and comfortable. The sound is crystal clear as well with much of the dialogue and intended interplay between Hartley and co. coming in loud and clear. The primary aspect of a product like this would be the sound, and it's a great feature of the DVD.
Goodies:
Among the bunch of extras is the thirty minute "Behind the Scenes" feature that shows Hartley filming her segments with Kylie Ireland, and preparing to tangle herself in her mini-orgy. The interplay between Hartley and her co-stars is an entertaining aspect of the featurette and it's pretty clear by Hartley's constant supervision of the production details who is in control on the set. She has an interesting attitude to her work and she's a fun person to watch. There's a fourteen minute interview with Nina Hartley in which she discusses her love for sex and her general experience with sex, as well as recapping a few of her guidelines from the DVD. I love hearing Hartley talk for the simple fact that she has many interesting stories and insights, and it's an engrossing experience. There's also a Bonus Sex Scene, a nineteen minute segment from "Sex Across America" that's, not coincidentally, an orgy sequence with three girls on two guys. There's also a six minute photo gallery of all the women from the DVD, which curiously enough is entertaining.
After Thought:
"Nina Hartley's Guide to the Perfect Orgy" is an instructional DVD discussing the etiquette and environments to Orgy parties, and eventual demonstrations on perfect orgies, so like all instructional videos this is strictly something you would rent, watch a few times, write down some pointers, and return, because instructional videos really aren't worth keeping most of the time. Nina Hartley never really tells us anything dynamic or groundbreaking, but she does have some interesting things to say even if she can contradict herself sometimes.
