DVD Perspectives

Video (technical): The 4:3 video is a mixed bag...it's somewhat different in each scene. It somehow reminds me of a series of movies I reviewed a few years ago that were called 12 Nasty Girls Masturbating. For the first couple of episodes, director Steve Austin actually used masturbation scenes that he shot as "Extras" material for other movies. Later on, when the concept took flight, Steve shot masturbation scenes specifically for the series. In the same way, these "mean girl" tease scenes all feel like "Extras" material. That's fine, but each scene feels quite different: different lighting, different color balance, different audio balance, and so forth. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is no videographic uniformity among the scenes. One of the constants, however, is the videographer's insistence on tilting the camera to oblique angles while shooting the action. I hate this trite characteristic of far too many porn movies. No professional movie or TV cameraman would make people tilt so they look like they're going to fall off the screen! In addition, the lighting is often poor, the camera movements are jerky instead of smooth, and the color balance is often unflattering to the girls' fleshtones. On the bright side, the closeups and camera angles (especially the shot-from-below angles) are very good. Four stars.

Audio (technical): The sound is decent, except that it's hard to hear the girl's monologs in some scenes, especially Scene Eight. Three and one-half stars.

Extras: The DVD-5 disc I reviewed contains a full motion chapter selector arranged by girl; a sub-menu that allows you to jump to sub-sets of the scene including, for example, foot worship, ass worship, finger-fucking, and so on; multiple chapters per scene; and a screen that provides website addresses. That's it. This selection of Extras is substantially below average in today's marketplace. At least they could have added a behind-the-scenes (BTS) featurette! Two stars.

Aesthetics: I really liked the locations used during the shooting of Mean Bitches POV Volume 2. The locations and sets are very appropriate to the scenario and feel of the scene. The "hooker" scene took place in an alley set; the "mean nurse" scene took place in an examination room; the "dungeon" scene unfolded in a dungeon. The sets were not used particularly well, however. For example, none of the accouterments in the dungeon set were actually used by the mistress. The wardrobe is a mixed bag: some girls wear great outfits and others are so-so. There's no musical soundtrack and the scenes do not begin with any sort of set-up footage. The scenes do have, however, well developed and articulated themes. Three and one-half stars.
