Audio/Video Quality: The Twilight Zone Porn Parody was presented in the same 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color it was shot in by director Paul Thomas for Hustler Video using the standard definition MPEG-2 codec in 480p resolution for the SD version. While not his most visually stunning work of late, it reminded me of some of Paul's earlier works at Vivid, this being his first credited title since shown the door at his former long time employer last year. The composition of the camera angles was fairly good this time, the director balancing his usual dedication to plot over sex with a new crew that were not credited in the movie, the cover credits suggesting Brian Christopher edited it while Paul and Tony G. co-wrote it. While the editing was on the choppy side, it did seem to mirror a mainstream dynamic (except when the sex began each time), the impression that it was shot using a single camera left clearly in my mind. The fleshtones were generally accurate though and the DVD mastering was well done (the bitrate hovering around 6.2 Mbps in SD), making the majority of footage well handled (the sex scenes appeared to be on the saturated side again). There was no company watermark here, a fact that should appeal to Paul's fans out there. The audio was presented in a 2.0 Dolby Digital English (in 192 Kbps with a 48 kHz sampling rate) offering with the vocals sounding flat and the music pretty decent, some of the score meriting a nod from me.

Body of Review: Paul Thomas is one of the most award winning directors still alive in porn, his newest home being Hustler Video after his departure from Vivid. Unlike his previous works, he is now more directly subject to consumer demands as the company is simply distributing his movies, time will tell if tending to his artistic muse will result in the accolades he sought while under contract. His first movie for Hustler is called The Twilight Zone Porn Parody, the concept full of wonderful possibilities given the popularity and ingrained nature of the Rod Serling classic show from the early days in television, my initial impression that the movie was decidedly light on the usual parody aspects so many consumers have found to their liking. By this, I mean that there was weak narration, no rip-off theme music to convince you it was stolen from the show, and the ending twist that to this day rules in many shows and movies, was on the lame side, my resulting belief being that the movie title was not earned in the slightest. Still, with hotties like Kimberly Kane fresh off her sure to be award winning performance in The Sex Files 2 and the mighty Evan Stone trying his hand at drama (as opposed to his wonderful persona in Sex & The City XXX), I figured it might be worth looking into even if the title was merely a marketing trick. The back cover described the movie like this: "Venture Lane. A quiet, wholesome place. Where sex is something kept behind closed doors. Home to the tortured thoughts, emotions and desires to be found only in the hearts and minds of repressed men and women. Unfulfilled passion and jealousy can provide fertile ground for real evil..." Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

The sex was standard enough and Kimberly Kane even did some anal in the end, but the lack of personal chemistry between the partners and the mechanical sex they engaged in for limited amounts of time (the whole show clocked in at under 90 minutes) made me wonder if it was rushed into production to make it for this time of year; perhaps someone thinking Paul could rest on his previous laurels. I really wanted this one to be as good as some of the shills suggested, as much for the "Paul Thomas as an underdog" dynamic or the fact that I've long held the various incarnations of the Rod Serling classic as often some of the best writing on television but I even watched it a second time with friends who looked at me like I was crazy when I said it was a parody. In short then, The Twilight Zone Porn Parody would have been an okay middle of the week rental had it been labeled as something closer to what it really was, the darker thematic material suitable for those that are not crazy about the parody genre having become so prevalent in the industry but it barely pulled in a rental status thanks to Kimberly Kane and others looking ripe for the plucking, saying a lot about what you should expect.
