The Movie:

A legitimate classic of the early eighties if ever there was one, Anthony Spinelli's 1981 Metro Films production of Vista Valley PTA is a fantastic XXX take off on the popular Barbara Eden song (Harper Valley PTA for the uninitiated) and the subsequent television show that it inspired. When the film begins, Jessie St. James is driving to Vista Valley where she has taken a job teaching at a local high school. After stopping at the gas station where attendant John Leslie gives her directions, she's on her way.

Vista Valley seems pretty innocent on the surface. It looks like any other nice suburban town, full of clean cut folks just like you and me. The principal, who serves as the film's narrator, explains why Jessie's been sent to the school to help clean up some of the problems. It seems two teachers were raped and one was beaten in the last few months and she's here to take care of these problems. After a brief talk about the parents and their involvement in the PTA we cut to a car where two students, Richard Pacheco and Dorothy Lemay, are fooling around in the car. Centered around a series of taboo incidents, the bumping and grinding here is set up nicely, it's given a reason to happen, and it's generally pretty well photographed as well. The movie, at almost eighty five minutes, is a bit longer than most features of the era but it moves along at a good pace thanks to a decent script and some strong direction. The film holds up well in pretty much every way it needs to and if the fashions are dated, the actors who play the students more than a few years older than their characters, and the music is a bit hokey so be it. It's all part of the picture's charm.

The DVD

Video:

This fullframe transfer, which appears to present the film in its original aspect ratio, looks surprisingly sharp and colorful, if a bit faded, even if it is interlaced. The picture quality, for an old XXX film from 1981, looks surprisingly good. There are some specks here and there as well as a moderate amount of grain but this looks to be a film sourced transfer and not a VHS or tape source. The black levels stay strong, the skin tones look natural, and while there are a few scenes that look a bit on the soft side in addition to come mild compression artifacts noticeable in the blacks, overall this is a nice picture. A 'Copyright 2009 VCX' but does appear a few times at the bottom of the screen throughout the movie. This is VCX's method of protecting their properties, so it's understandable that it appears, but it's bound to annoy some purists.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack is a little muffled and not of the best quality, but again, it's taken from an older source so the limitations of the era's technology are going to be there when that's the case. Dialogue is pretty easy to understand, however, and the background music comes through reasonably clear. There aren't a lot of sound effects used in the film, mostly just some random moaning and groaning during the action scenes and these are handled just fine, as are the talkier bits of the movie. Surprisingly enough, this DVD also features a Spanish language dub. The dubbing doesn't always match the lips of the actors but more often than not it comes close. While you probably won't want to watch it this way (unless you only speak Spanish), it's cool to see it included here.

Extras:

Aside from some tacky animated menus, VCX has included three bonus scenes, the first of which is from Sex Wish (6:25) and it's more or less a lot of old inner city NYC footage before showing us a quick clip of Zebedy Colt getting his rape on. The second clip is from Practice Makes Perfect (5:26) and it features a cute blonde farm girl giving head to the farmhand in her bedroom before they lay on their sides for some spoon fucking. The third clip is from Expose Me Now (8:43) where Ron Jeremy fucks a brunette on a couch while a blonde watches and masturbates. Last but not least, we've got a clip from a French import called Two At Once (9:19) in which a suave looking dude fucks an incredibly foxy Brigitte Lahiae in his car out in the woods.

Rounding out the extras are trailers for Easy, Aunt Peg, Sweet Throat and Flesh Fever, the Legendary Tribute montage of vintage adult movie clips as well as some animated menus, scene selection and a web-link.

Final Thoughts:

Vista Valley PTA features a great cast in their prime who can actually act far better than most probably expect porn performers to be able to. The 'taboo' sex scenes are hotter than the majority of material from this era and the picture is well directed, wholly entertaining, and plenty steamy. VCX's transfer could have been a bit better but it's not bad and while the extras are repetitive (some retrospective interviews or commentary tracks really would make this line of classics far more interesting) it's hard not to recommended this disc based on the strength of the movie.
