Note: The following is a review for the HD DVD version of Cockasian, a flagship title for Digital Playground that was released in standard definition DVD years ago to heaps of praise, garnering various award nominations in numerous categories from industry juggernaut AVN. The content of the movie was the same and the extras barely modified to include HD DVD trailers that show off the higher resolution of the titles that are either out or about to come out in the popular new format. The quick version of the review is that the show looks and sounds somewhat better but it always looked pretty good so it's value as a double dip will depend on your wallet.  I suggest you check out this Trailer for Cockasian to get a better idea of what it looks like in this new form.  Enjoy!

Extra's: The best extra was the lengthy bonus scene described below between Charmane Star and condom clad Eric Masterson. It was long and showed her in a different light, making it all the more strokable as a result. Considering how rare it is for the company to provide any serious extras on their non-block buster titles, this was notable indeed, especially since the movie itself was already well over two hours. Audio/Video Quality: Cockasian HD was presented in the usual 1.78:1 ratio widescreen color it was shot in by director Robby D. for Digital Playground using a full 1080p resolution and the AVC/MPEG-4 codec to provide a substantially improved picture from the SD version that came out long ago. Digital had the foresight to shoot using the latest technology and their back catalog is only now being released in HD-DVD (Blu-Ray starting next year) so expect a lot of improvements as the company becomes more handy with the new formats. This is one of those times when the HD treatment enhanced the picture enough to merit a double dip by true fans of the ladies though it was far from “6 times the quality” the format offers according to advertising promoted by the format developers. Still, the slightly rough look of the project added some charm to the feature and while Robby has certainly become more competent in shooting HD flavored porn, the composition of the shots always favored the ladies. The grain of the original and compression artifacts were minimized and the resolution was strong enough to allow the detail of clothing, skin hair, and all sorts of enhancing features to pop out at you. The audio was presented with the upgraded 5.1 Dolby Digital + and the improvements were slighter here with little separation between the speakers in most cases, but some added clarity of the vocals all the same. As time marches on, porn audio tracks have not marched along as much as their mainstream counterparts, an area that I note with increasing frequency, but some of the hiss I got when I turned up the SD version to high levels was not as obvious so the dynamic range was enhanced as well as the thump of the bass; most of which I believe were added in post production (I’m guessing by talented Nick P. during his infamous “audio scrub” procedure that he is allowed to do on Robby’s pet projects for Handheld).

Body of Review: Robby D. has recently been expanding outside of his work for Digital Playground by making porn under their exclusively distributed Hand Held Pictures line (owned by Robby if I recall correctly). As others have been initially slow to realize, this line of titles tends to be more hard core and less about the comedic aspects that are so important to the Jack Universe that I have come to appreciate over the years. There is also a distinctive kind of theme to most of these releases, the latest being Cockasian HD, a play on the term used for white people (Caucasian) that took scenes from a broad spectrum of time to offer up some of the best single disc value from the company in recent memory. If you like Asian gals, there were some from all sorts of backgrounds and body shapes, marking a change from the usually white bread world the director seems to spend the majority of his time with. I’ll be up front that my tastes regarding Asian ladies is not nearly as refined as many of you, my taste for curves and blond hair tending to override the otherwise exotic appeal such ladies offer up. Still, I liked this one a whole lot, to the point where even the director was surprised when we discussed it awhile back, so fans of the genre might find this an impossibly hard to resist treat. If you’re still interested, here’s a really brief look at the scenes, noting that the only condom was in the bonus scene:

Scene One: Tia Tanaka, one of the Asian darlings of the moment in porn, was up first as she talked with Robby outside of a house while she was dressed in her slutware outfit. Summary: Cockasian HD by Robby D. and Digital Playground was full of fuck for the buck value as the movie and bonus scene totaled nearly three hours of all Asian fun as the ladies hooked up with the usual white guys Robby seems to rely on so heavily. Given my experience with some of the cast, I was pleasantly surprised at how decent a performance most of them gave, adding to the replay value and strokability that consumers so appreciate in their porn. In short, Cockasian was well worth a rating of Highly Recommended from me and real fans of Asian women will likely find this one impossible to resist given the focus on quality by Robby and Nick (his partner in poontang crime here).
