Extras: The first disc had trailers and a pop shot compilation from the scenes. The best extra was the exclusive sex scene between Effie and James Deen that lasted 35:19 minutes, the couple positioned on the large white couch with the camera set down early on to show a fairly generic tryst. Audio/Video Quality: Group Sex was presented in anamorphic widescreen as shot by director James Deen for James Deen Productions. James shot the footage, usually just setting the camera down somewhere and leaving the camera on, while Danny Wylde assisted the director with editing, the minimalist approach used as best I could tell. The flesh tones were a bit more washed out than usual and the framing was about what one would expect from a guy setting a camera down to obtain most of the material, the resolution clocking in at the usual standard definition 720 by 480, the 2.0 audio track using the AC3 codec here. There were some compression artifacts and the scenes were often broken up into sub scenes but it was an extension of James’ previous works for those keeping track.

Body of Review: James Deen has long been known as one of the best feature actors in porn, particularly in parodies, even if his gonzo scenes fell a little flat. Over time, he overcame that limitation and made his fans happy, his current status as a director at James Deen Productions proving him time and again. Even when I don’t personally find his works suited for me, I have to hand it to the director for trying new things, his latest movie called Group Sex. The premise was simple enough, James and the other men (in some scenes) had sex with a woman or two (or three) with a lot of spontaneity as the director set the hand held camera down with a wide area covered much of the time. Some trysts were more reasonably called orgies than others but in all, it was an interesting selection of choices deployed here, most of the ladies lesser known to be sure. The company website described the lengthy set of scenes like this: “It's an all out Group Sex bonanza where everyone gets in on the action and no one leaves unsatisfied. You got so many combinations of girls and guys that its too much to handle. Cum join in on this sexual free for all and know you will leave tired and drained!!” Here’s a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that condoms were used at times for those still interested:

Scene One: Bliss Dolce, a Latina with a few dozen credits to her name, and brunette industry veteran Dana DeArmond, were up first with James Deen. The scene started with scruffy James calling Dana on the phone, the man setting up his hand held camera in a stationary position overlooking a large padded bed while he waited for her. The camera was set up on such a wide angle that the couple were tiny as a portion of the screen and that continued throughout the scene as the guys came in to join, greatly reducing my appreciation for the scene in some ways, Tommy entering around the 23 minute mark to strip quickly and help fuck the slightly thick lady, her oral skills bringing him to life. James looked at the camera from time to time and sat back to let Tommy and Effie go at it, Seth entering a few minutes later to repeat the process though at any given time most of the action seemed to show two guys doing her at once, the other man left off to the side or beating off while waiting for a turn (oral and vaginal mostly), only a couple of fairly short sections showing much DP or clearly anal action. The scene ended as the guys took turns nutting on her torso and face, James revealing the camera and asking if he could use it for his website.

Scene Five: Kacy Lane, Jade Nile, were up last with James Deen, on the set of a previously reviewed movie (Black and Blue, I believe). Kacy and James were getting frisky as the crew shot in another part of the restaurant, her flashing him and the two kissing quietly before he followed her to the bathroom to fuck. Summary: Group Sex by director James Deen for James Deen Productions did manage to show some chemistry, some energy, and even some enthusiasm at times but it was largely inconsistent in terms of the technical values and the cast itself so I rated it as a Rent It. I prefer a director take charge of his sets and what takes place in a show, James preferring to spotlight the trysts in an organic manner where the scenes evolved in whatever manner possible, the shaky camera replaced by James setting the camera down too often and crossing his fingers more than any conscious decisions as best I could tell. In short though, I liked Group Sex enough to watch the double discs at least once but some of the fluff would have looked better on the cutting room floor so let me know what you liked about it (and hated about it) if you pick up a copy soon.
