Audio/Video Quality: James Deen’s Sex Tapes: Off Set Sex 2 was presented in anamorphic widescreen as directed by James Deen for Girlfriends Films. The bulk of the camera work was either James shooting the footage in POV while the rest of it was him setting the camera down to show him boning the babes, a dynamic popular on other sets for years before James caught on himself. The POV work of his was not as shaky as when he assigned another to handle the shooting and his editing efforts with Danny Wylde were actually pretty decent this time, leaving in most material as part of the series dynamic. The flesh tones were accurate and while the framing and other technical aspects were not in the same league as what you’ll find elsewhere, the low grade approach worked well given the context, no company watermarks displayed for those who care. The aural components were on the basic side too, the vocals easily heard in most cases during the interviews and the loud moaning, nothing sounding mixed or dubbed in the generic offering.

Body of Review: James Deen is a popular male performer who sometimes dabbles in directing porn, his latest distributor being Girlfriends Films as things didn’t work out at Evil Angel or Burning Angel. His latest title in for review is called James Deen’s Sex Tapes: Off Set Sex 2, the show a true gonzo effort that played to James’ strengths as a director, the man setting the camera down to blindly capture the heated trysts he engages in with some attractive younger women. Given how much I really liked his original volume of the series, a double disc set, I figured this would work too, the front cover claiming it was also a double disc set when it simply used a double layer approach and higher compression rate to jam the footage onto the single disc. With James pairing up with Katie St. Ives again, Ashlyn Molloy, Mia Austin, Liv Aguilera, and Jessica Ryan: I felt this would be a winner given their usual chemistry together. The company website described the show like this: “This is what it looks like when gorgeous porn stars have sex off set, without the camera crew. Be a voyeur of real sex with Ashlyn Molloy, Jessica Ryan, Katie St. Ives, Liv Aguilera and Mia Austin. James shows up at their house with a camera; just James, no one else. He seduces them. What saved the movie was the manner in which the director was so in synch with the well chosen ladies here, Ashlyn Molloy, Katie St. Ives, and Jessica Ryan leading the pack to make this effort really work for me, surprising me at the replay value and strokability to earn an amazing rating of Highly Recommended. In short, James Deen’s Sex Tapes: Off Set Sex 2 could have spent more energy polishing the material up and deploying a variety of methods to capture the sex far, far better but given the chemistry infused sexual encounters between James and the ladies, he pulled it off to make this one well worth picking up in part because of the unpolished, amateur look of the footage given the enthusiasm and lack of pacing of the scenes, some added entertainment included courtesy of the verbal banter between the performers.
