The Movie:

Vamps proudly touts the headline 'open your door to the creatures of the night' on its cover art but aside from some mild neck biting and some black velvet outfits, this collection of six thematically linked scenes is pretty much cookie cutter gonzo porn. As is the norm with Penthouse features, it's nicely shot and features some reasonably classy sets and good cinematography, but is that enough?

Scene 1 - Jenna Haze And Marco Banderas: The first scene takes place outside in the dark night, fog rolling in from somewhere off camera. Jenna struts around in her outfit and gets our attention and also that of Marco who is pretty stoked to see her top come off. They make out and she gives him head for a bit. He fucks her from behind and she rides him for a bit and then goes back to blowing him until he's good and ready, at which point, he shoots his load onto her mouth.

Scene 2 - Allison Pierce, Sascha And Jay Lassiter: This scene takes place inside with Allison strutting for the two boys who are definitely liking what they see. This might be a good one for couples to try out as it's completely vanilla flavored and not likely to upset anyone interested in smut, but those looking for something a little more creative and a little more interesting already know there are better discs out there.

The DVD

Video:

Vamps is presented in a 1080p MPEG-2 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Like a lot of the Penthouse 'fantasy' titles, this film is shot with a fairly soft look so don't expect the same amount of detail you'd get from other Blu-ray releases as this one is supposed to have a sort of 'dream like' vibe to it. There are also some minor mpeg compression artifacts visible in some scenes as well as a bit of mild shimmering. It's not a bad transfer, but neither is it a high point in the evolution of HD porno.

Sound:

The sole audio track on this Blu-ray release is a 48 kHz 192 kbps Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound mix in English. While it's disappointing to see only a 2.0 mix contained on this release, the quality of it is fine even if it doesn't take advantage of the format. Dialogue is clean and clear and the levels are all properly balanced. There are no problems with hiss or distortion and the score sounds nice.

Extras:

The main extra on this release is a five-minute bonus scene starring Jenna Haze who treats us to a lovely 'private dance' where she starts scantily clad and ends buck naked, fondling herself for our enjoyment as she goes about her business. Rounding out the extras are a still Penthouse DVD and Blu-ray releases, motion menus, Digital Playground contact info, and scene selection.

Final Thoughts:

Vamps is pretty mediocre. The girls all look good and it's got nice production values but the transfer isn't going to blow you away in terms of HD quality and the audio is nothing more than average. The extras are slim, and the feature itself, while nicely shot, does very little to differentiate itself from the rest of the pack even if it does periodically play with vampiric themes. Rent it.
