Extras: The extras were well done here with a bunch of material fans will appreciate starting with several Behind the Scenes features on the show. The first one was aptly named Behind the Scenes Part 1, the second called Behind the Scenes Part 2, the third labeled as Director/Producer Video Travelogue, and the forth called Lights! Camera! On Set Action!. The first provided a nice overview of the show and performers, starting off with Jenna Haze but quickly moving through the rest of the leads as they prepared for their lines or scenes, even the production crew getting some screen time in the 29:52 minute featurette. The second one lasted 32:04 minutes and started with Will Ryder explaining certain aspects of the show, Michelle Avanti having a lot of fun before (and during) her interracial scene with Nathan Threat) but some of the drama leaking into the proceeding as well. There was some time with Morgan's dog Larry and Ron Jeremy with the harem gals looking so hot I bet he wished he had kept his AIM test current (it had expired while he was flying overseas so he couldn't get an 8 girl hummer as planned). Nathan had some fun with his namesake doll, Jack revising his real life role as a policeman, Nina and Eva comparing pussies, and more tidbits from the scenes.

The third then lasted 20:19 minutes as Mullen and David hammed it up to give some insights from a couch, serving as a more coherent look at the flick with clips (and details about the production) those this one looked more like it was mastered in standard definition than the other BTS features. The last one was a 27:35 minute feature on the production that seemed to be edited from the deleted footage more than show clips as the last part did and less of the goofing around as the first two did; perhaps best described as a blooper reel. It provided yet another take on the movie with each reminding me of how varied any artistic endeavor might be when approached at different times with differing frames of reference (Jeff and James were responsible for the majority of the features per the credits and vocals heard from behind the camera. There were trailers, a photogallery, a means to replay the DVD animation introductory piece, and an audio commentary as well. The audio commentary consisted mainly of Will Ryder, James Bartholet, and Sunny Lane talking about their experiences (and related information) throughout the movie, skimming over some of the personal drama I was made aware of via phone conversations with the director earlier this year, but adding some depth. Sunny did not provide as much of interest though if it had been a video commentary, she would have reigned supreme given how sexy she looks these days (yum!).

Audio/Video Quality: Not Bewitched XXX Blu-ray was presented in a widescreen color with an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 as shot by director Will Ryder for X-Play (as distributed by Adam & Eve) in the AVC codec (for the high definition version using 1080i resolution). The movie closely mimicked the design of the color years of the mainstream show nicely, not quite mirroring it but stylishly maintaining the parody angle. The "look" of the clothing, settings, and numerous props used to instill the feel of the times from the show worked so well thanks to the contribution of Art Director Scott David, the quieter partner at the company but every much as important as the jovial Jeff. The camera angles flattered the ladies in almost all cases, the editing assisting in contemporizing the sexual scenes while allowing the plot points to cater to the way the television show looked (or at least how I remembered it looking when I watched it). On a technical level, the lighting was good and the bitrate hovered around the 11.2 Mbps area, making me appreciate the high definition version upgrade with fewer compression artifacts and higher resolution (this being a compliment because not many porn flicks look better under the magnifying glass of high def), but it was not as "night and day" different as it could have been.

The movie being in widescreen was a deviation from the original series that was full frame but even as the director is still getting his feet wet in high definition, he did a decent job of it (and will get better with experience).

The audio was still presented in the standard 2.0 Dolby Digital English with a 192 Kbps and a 48 kHz sampling rate. The vocals were slightly hollow but the strength of the audio track was again the music by Jeff Mullen and Big John Black, the pair bringing in their mainstream credentials to keep the score close, but not too close, though I imagine my favorite lawyer at ADE will fuss about how they will be sued as he did with the Bradys parody last year. There was even an optional laugh track for those that want the authentic sitcom experience but I have to say that either version seemed nicely done. There was no noticed separation between the channels (perhaps a hidden homage to the original show that was broadcast in monaural) and the dynamic range was such that it could have been stronger but only at the expense of taking a mainstream movie approach (like the failed remake with Will Ferrell a few years ago).

Body of Review: Not The Bradys XXX was the surprise smash hit of last year in porn circles, still managing to sell well a year later unlike the vast majority of titles that came out. While some cynics attribute the success of the show to the way it was relentlessly publicized or the way the mainstream media picked up on the parody, the bottom line is that a lot of people wanted to see something light, entertaining, and not so heavily rooted in circus act sex (like my top pick of the year, Upload). Thankfully, that success helped spawn a cottage industry of retro-parodies, X-Play and director Will Ryder proving they are still the top of the food chain with Not Bewitched XXXBlu-ray. The movie is like a pornified episode of the beloved Bewitched, a television series I watched for years when it aired between 1964 and 1972. Distilling the basic elements to make for an entertaining porno, Jenna Haze stepped in for the Samantha Stevens role originally played by Elizabeth Montgomery, Mike Horner filled the shoes of two Dicks (York & Sargent) to play Darren, Nina Hartley played Agnes Moorehead's Endora, James Bartholet showed his acting chops as Larry Tate, Michelle Avanti was delightful as Gladys Kravitz, and even Ron Jeremy joined in to play the bombastic Dr. Bombay. In this version, baby Tabitha was played by Teagan Presley too, the plot revolving around her being magically altered by scatterbrained Aunt Clara (hotty Eva Angelina). More than any parody release of the year, the show worked thanks to the level of detail that the production team provided, relying less on the name of the show as others have to include props, lines, and situations indicative of episodes so many of us know by heart. The back cover said it like this: "Darren & Samantha have a big problem when Aunt Clara can't undo a spell that turns little Tabitha into an 18 year old cutie. All hell breaks loose when nosy neighbors, the boss & the police arrive. Wild sex, dirty witchcraft, perfect tits, ass and pussy abound in this hilarious XXX spoof of the 1960s classic TV show." Considering Teagan was the only performer to get a second scene in the movie (more on that later), it is clear that her appeal was noticed by the director and producer of the show, fans already preparing for her to stick with this type of scene (and possibly lesbian scenes) due to her recent career choice. In any case, Teagan looked as cute as could be and appeared to be getting off for real. Yum!

Scene Three: Sunny Lane, Aurora Snow, Daisy Lane, Kandice Nicole, Kelly Skyline, Winter Sky, Madison Ivy, and Marli Jane, were up next in a harem orgy scene that fans of lipstick lesbians will appreciate as if the director was channeling Jim Holiday. Sunny looked great, the most physically appealing lady of the entire movie for me, and Aurora was as sexy as ever with a horde of newcomer hotties all jumping in on one another with toys and tongues. There was a lot of oral here, be it on tits, pussies, or even ass cracks, and the toy use was the second most plentiful type of footage. Not all of the ladies were as well versed in the art of giving pleasure as the two leads were but like most orgies, there was sufficient flesh to go around several times over, adding to the replay value thanks to the mixture of medium and close up shots that allowed all the gals to have some quality time in the spotlight. Ron Jeremy licked a few toes and felt the ladies up on occasion but the word on the street was that when the scene was shot his AIM test was not current (he flew in from England) so he wasn't able to partake in the pleasures of the flesh in any meaningful manner. My favorite parts revolved around Sunny and Aurora, particularly when Sunny donned a strap on dildo to bone her like she owned her, but fans of the new gals will have plenty of eye candy to add to their personal spank banks. Active oral and toy use made this a winner of a lesbian orgy scene, something extremely rare since Jim's passing.

Scene Four: Jenna Haze, the cutie featured on the front cover in the plaid dress, was up next and to be fair to her, she is perhaps the best known lady of the cast, finally getting a chance to show her acting chops with the likes of award winning thespian Mike Horner in bed. Scene Five: Michelle Avanti, playing the nosy neighbor Gladys, was then up in an interracial scene with Nathan Threat. Her wig was hilarious and she did a great job as she snooped around, Dino Bravo nailing the role as her husband perfectly (the non sex roles in the movie were all well played), leading to Nathan settling for her over Teagan, a missed opportunity between Jack Lawrence and Nina Hartley making me laugh. Michelle displayed the 1960's suburbia mindset really well but her jungle fever got the best of her, Nathan eating her out (the editors missing the action reflected in the window) to her delight. Summary: Not Bewitched XXX Blu-ray by director Will Ryder for X-Play was a great deal of fun and proved that a feature, even a comedic parody, need not sacrifice heated sex scenes to work for a wide audience. The technical aspects were better than ever and the extras supplied some additional value but the main selling point for me was the great sex scenes that you simply won't find in most features these days. I rated it the upgrade as Highly Recommended  due to the levels of fuck for the buck, the replayability, and the devotion to detail no one else in porn seems capable of providing, the movie being a far better tribute to the series than the super expensive Nora Ephron remake a few years back in both spirit as well as humor. While I found the standard definition a better value (less than half the price and capable of being played by far more people), if you have the extra money, the modest upgrade in video resolution and detail might warrant paying more though my SD version looked good upconverted so your mileage may vary. Maybe director Will Ryder should make a few calls to Hollywood and let them know he works cheap given the comparative quality of the two projects but whatever else may be said, Not Bewitched XXX proved to be even better than Not The Bradys XXX so I look forward to seeing what other projects he has up his sleeve. For me, there has been nothing even close as good this year for a comedy title, once again proving my belief that creativity and ingenuity beat big budgets almost every time. Look for this one on top porn lists at the end of the year and around award time for all sorts of accolades. Great work!
