The Movie:

This Henri Pachard directed dirty little ditty is a sequel to the original Hothouse Rose that Pachard helmed a year prior in 1991. The storyline follows Jeanna Fine as Liz Harris, a woman obsessed over a porno starlet named Hothouse Rose (Victoria Paris) who just doesn't know when to quit no matter how much she knows she needs to. Her lust controls her, and things soon spiral out of control for her and those who she seems to come into contact with. Basically, it's a soap opera with some hardcore sex in it and a few moments of awkward comedy, but let's face it, most of us aren't tuning in for the story, especially when you've got a cast as good as the one assembled for this movie.

The DVD

Video:

Surprisingly enough, this one was shot on 35mm film, which is odd considering that by the early nineties almost all the porn in the world was being shot fast and cheap on video. The transfer isn't perfect here as there are some mild compression artifacts if you want to look for them as well as some minor print damage in spots, but for the most part this movie looks half way decent on this DVD. Color reproduction is good, black levels are strong and there's a decent level of detail present in both the foreground and the background of the picture. Not a reference quality image, but a decent one none the less.

Sound:

The plain vanilla Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono sound mix is clean and clear even when it does show the limitations of the source material used for the disc. Some of the scenes are just a little flat and don't sound too robust but at the very least you can hear everything that's being said and this mix gets done what it needs to get done without any really big problems. The funky dance music score sounds incredibly dated but it ads to the fun of the feature and obviously isn't a fault of the disc so much as it is simply bad taste.

Extras:

Extras are limited to an advertisement trailers for three other VCA titles (Cum Lust, I Spy POV and Butt Blasted 3, a photo gallery consisting of roughly twenty-five images from the film, a phone sex advertisement, an internet link and a contact page for VCA.

Final Thoughts:

Nina Hartley, Jeanna Fine, Victoria Paris and a pre boob-job Candace Heart in the same film? Yep. Well directed and rather steamy, Hothouse Rose 2 is completely melodramatic in spots but still hot enough to matter. VCA's disc isn't going to become legendary but it looks and sounds good enough to warrant a recommendation, particularly if you're a fan of the early nineties scene.
