Extras: The first disc had a 9:46 minute Blooper Reel as an extra but most of the extras were included on the second disc. Rick Garcia was credited with the shooting of the five part Behind the Scenes feature, the volumes lasting 60:34 minutes in total, Tommy showing a lot of carpentry skill and a number of brief interviews included just as a multitude of clips of the movie being made. There were then twelve interviews which totaled 52:24 minutes, a 6:12 minute long color test (where some processing altered the look of the footage), a 3:21 Fight Scene comparison reel, and a 2:04 minute second fight concept clip. There were then seven trailers and teaser trailers for the movie as well as a photogallery; the double disc set contained in a slip cover with an opening flap.

Audio/Video Quality: Spartacus MMXII: The Beginning was presented in 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen as shot by director Marcus London for Wicked Pictures. The camerawork was primarily handled by Francois Clousot, the editing by Marcus London and London Gunn Productions, and most of the cast seemed to participate in various aspects of the production (to get the most bang for the buck as it were). Unlike so many parodies that look like they were shot on video (a rather cheap look most of the time), this one went to great lengths to offer a film look, some of the special effects covered in the extras located on the second disc. The lighting included some very shadowy sex scenes, some interesting special effects (not all of which were in the fight scenes by the way, though this did appear to be the area where the special effects were covered most notably), and a number of nods to the mainstream series on the premium cable Starz channel. The attention to detail helped make this a visual feast of eye candy, not just for the sexy babes either. As I said, and was apparently quoted on the front cover, this was one of the “most highly anticipated movies this year”. The aural components were also handled with a lot of care, the music by Nonstop Music, APM Music, and Arc-X Entertainment, combining with the easily heard vocals, and some ambient sounds to make this sound as mainstream as I think it could for the kind of budget it was whispered to have. This was another area that I have come to expect very little but the team surprised me by crafting a solid little audio experience, perhaps a sequel will refine it even more.

Body of Review: Marcus London has been performing in porn for years now, the muscular stud more recently expanding into production work and directing. His latest and greatest movie in this regard is being distributed by Wicked Pictures, a blockbuster called Spartacus MMXII: The Beginning. Based heavily on the Starz cable series, the show details the origin of the lead character (well played by Marcus London), his enslavement and rivalry with Crixus (Tommy Gunn), and basically draws on many elements while adding sex as a key feature. Few will suggest the cable show lacked in sexuality but it was definitely more overt here, the casting of ladies including Devon Lee, the return of Miko Lee, Gracie Glam, and Jenna Presley as well as Tanya Tate and others in smaller roles. There was a lot to appreciate this time though both during the sex and on the sands of the training grounds, definitely making it one of the most anticipated big blockbusters of the 2012 season. The back cover described the movie like this: “Spartacus (Marcus London) is captured and forced to fight to the death in the arena. After surviving the onslaught, he is sold to the Ludis of Batiatus (Tony de Sergio) where he is thrust into a world of sex and violence. He finds an unlikely ally in fellow slave Crixus (Tommy Gunn), as they are both expected to please Lucretia (Devon Lee). In addition to performing in depraved orgies, they must train to fight against the unbeaten giant Androcoles. Will they fall victim to the gladiator or will they prove victorious and earn their freedom? A sexual epic for the ages!” Here’s a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

Scene One: Devon “Lucretia” Lee, the busty babe featured on the center of the front cover (redheaded with big boobs), was up first as she personally rewarded Tommy “Crixus” Gunn for a fine display in the arena. Unlike so many competitors, this one was driven in large part by the men due to the nature of the beast but it worked out quite well, setting up possible sequels should the masses agree with my assessment to find this one worthy of being an Xcritic Pick. The movie worked as a whole and the sex blended in better than it did in the mainstream cable series, this tribute to a popular series sure to evoke a lot of appreciation by fans of the cast. In short, Spartacus MMXII: The Beginning was a homerun by the production team led by Marcus London, Tommy Gunn, Devon Lee, and Miko Lee so give it a whirl and you may find that the buzz surrounding this one for so very long was not just hype, it was the culmination of lots of hard work proving fruitful.
