Extras: The only extra really worth discussing was the 9:08 minute long Behind the Scenes feature. It consisted mostly of the ladies getting interviewed as well as some breast play by the make up artist contingent (one of my favorites looking like she's filling out with child). I wish the entire cast had been given the chance to get in on it but it did start with Eva so most of you won't be as disappointed. There was also a photogallery and a pop shot recap from the scenes, a true double sided DVD cover and slip case on top of it too.

Audio/Video Quality: Down the Hatch 23 was presented in an anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 widescreen color as shot by director Ray Bones for Diabolic. Having only seen a limited amount of his works in the past, I was ready for anything and to be frank, he did a decent job here with the lighting helping to minimize the video noise, and other visual flaws that are too common to porn flicks these days. The fleshtones leaned a little too much to being over saturated with yellow tint (perhaps from a lack of properly setting the white balance on the camera for the lighting) and the camera angles were edited too aggressively at times but even the over use of close up shots was not too bad here as far as I was concerned. There was more grain than usual here and the aliasing along with it distracted me on occasion; making the show one of Ray's weaker looking titles. The bitrate was almost always hovering in the mid 5 Mbps area but the picture struck me as being less crisp than similar efforts by the company over the years, perhaps the compression ratio or other technical aspect weakening the picture more than a little bit in the process used to convert the scenes to DVD's MPEG-2 codec. The audio was presented in 2.0 Dolby Digital stereo English using the standard 192 Kbps bitrate, generally sounding lackluster with no depth, separation, or major range in the dynamic of the track. The vocals were minimal in most cases and the background noises rarely noticed; the automatic gain such that it did bug me at times.

Body of Review: Ray Bones has directed a number of titles for Diabolic of late and my observation of the guy is that he seems to pick some of the best ladies to flesh out his cast of the entire company's directorial line up. His latest release for them is a swallowing flick called Down the Hatch 23, picking up the series from a long line of zany directors that each added a different flavor to the endeavor. The six scenes were all focused on gonzo styled sex that ended with the ladies swallowing semen, some of the hottest names in the industry participating in the movie such as Eva Angelina, Alexis Texas, and even Courtney Cummz (who I thought was still under contract for sister company Zero Tolerance). The anamorphic widescreen process used on the movie added to the appeal of it going in so I was hopeful that it would live up to the marketing hype, regardless of the history of the series (when previous volumes were handled correctly, they were great but when they weren't, they often flopped). Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

Scene One: Eva Angelina, the busty beauty on the front cover, was up first with Ben English after she gave up some heated tease to showcase all those body parts fans want to play with. Ben came in to diddle her senseless with his hand, resulting in Eva dropping to her knees to aggressively slob his knob. I'd have preferred she do some more traditional teasing too but the appeal of the lovely young lady was enough to keep me interested, her appreciation of cock leading her to blow studly Mick Blue. There were flashes of chemistry between the ladies but neither seemed too enthusiastic about working with Mark for some reason; appreciating his dick but not the man himself. There was relatively little going on her aside from some oral and vaginal screwing; the over the top vocals, waterworks, and cumswapping fulfilling the advertised actions but not selling the scene to me.

Summary: Down the Hatch 23 by director Ray Bones for Diabolic started off on a high note with two very appealing scenes but dragged after that far too much for me to rate as anything higher than a Rent It. I admit to having had high hopes for the show going into it and seeing "Double Dee" in the BTS was another reason to believe the people that point out Courtney's presence in the movie was no surprise but check this one out before spending a lot of money or you may find yourself relying too heavily on Eva and Courtney to save the day. In short, Down the Hatch 23 had some bright moments courtesy of a few stars but the overall package wasn't as "down" as some in the series have been in the past.
