Audio/Video Quality: Not The Lovin' Kind was presented in the originally filmed 1.33:1 ratio full frame color as shot by director Jim Holliday for VCA Pictures back in 1996. The picture was blurry a few times, always relying on a sense of raw energy rather than pure technical expertise, and had a wonderfully diverse cast as seen on the back of the DVD cover. The fleshtones were accurate thanks to the kind of flat lighting Jim used on the movie with no significant amount of grain or video noise to speak of observed during my screening of the flick. This was a departure from the fluffy bunny stories that Jim told as his career rose in the ranks of VCA; concentrating on a story rather than just lots of silly snippets of sex and insider jokes (IIRC, he made this one for Shayla LaVeaux, at her request, as a more serious title, with her co-writing the tale). The audio was presented in the usual Dolby Digital stereo English but the vocals appeared to be looped in a few cases, the dialogue pretty well handled, and it sounded hollow less frequently than previous efforts by the director. The music was trademark Jim Holliday style as provided by Dino Ninn and Earl Ninn & Pinnacle (the lead song sung by Nick East really well), with intermittent music punctuating the scenes from time to time. The music was all original and actually fit in the action, with the lyrics working better than average for the action; the kind of breezy and fun stuff I always liked about Jim's later efforts.

Body of Review: Jim Holliday was always a ladies man in the classic sense; he loved women deeply and without reserve, even knowing they'd screw him over more often than not. One of his favorite ladies over the years was a gal he affectionately referred to in many ways; a gal by the name of Shayla LaVeaux. He liked her so much that he eschewed his normal type of movie to make a feature about heartbreak and country western music (yup, he had both kinds of music folks) called Not The Lovin' Kind; a title he referred to as the showcase Shayla LaVeaux movie (considering how much she did to make the movie, that makes sense). The cover explained it like this: "You know all those things you've come to expect from a Jim Holliday feature? Well, trash 'em -- that is, with the exception of sizzling sex -- because Holliday has taken a complete departure in Not The Lovin' Kind. Gone are all the in-jokes and kinky caricatures of nurses and cheerleaders, only to be replaced by something completely unexpected... This is Shayla LaVeaux's shining hour - her signature movie - as she plays a modern woman searching for love in all the wrong places. From an unbelievable girl-girl encounter with Jill Kelly to three backdoor slammings, Shayla proves that she is, indeed, on of the greatest erotic superstars of all time - in a movie as shockingly real as it is nasty." If you liked Shayla in her prime, there really was never a better flick to enjoy, the movie also serving as the ascension of Jill Kelly into Jim's movie world too. That said, here's a quick look at the entertaining movie's scenes by cast and action, noting no condoms were used:

Scene One: Shayla LaVeaux, the hotty underneath Jill Kelly on the front DVD cover, was up first before the credits rolled with her perfect pucker in the air on a bed as Peter North looked at her with desire. You have to love a movie that starts so nicely but it got better when the first words out of her mouth were, "I'm gonna suck your dick like yesterday's lollipop." Peter warmed up her ass with his tongue to the light music score but she started off by impaling her pussy like crazy on his cock. He then stretched her ass with a toy before boning her backdoor, something she wasn't known for doing back then. While she was decidedly less active at anal, she had a warm glow afterwards, him acting like a jerk after rubbing out his load on her back and kicking her out (to a Country Western theme no less).

Scene Two: Sindee Coxx, a busty blonde wearing Daisy Dukes and a pink crop top, was up next in the dressing room with singer Nick East, fussing about the conditions of her employment. This didn't prevent her from carrying out said duties but thematically it could bug a few of you more sensitive types. She blew him to erection and then rode him actively before he rubbed out a load to her pubic hair. This was followed a cute bit of dreamy advice by Nick and Jill as Shayla rubbed herself on the bed.

Scene Three: Sahara Sands, Shayla LaVeaux, and Mark Davis, were up next with Shayla getting eaten out by Mark first on a wooden table. She returned the favor with her usual energy and he did his then unique standing 69 before drilling her on the black leather couch. They had just about ended the scene when Sahara popped in to reignite the flames (she wasn't the cutest gal of the movie but I give her credit for raising the bar a bit higher with her performance). The technical DP on Shayla turned into a strap on dildo ride on Sahara, with an anal twist to cover all bases, her receiving a technical DP too before Mark rubbed out a load to her ass crack.

Scene Four: Missy, Julie Rage, Sindee Coxx, Kim Kitaine, and Nick East, were up next as the lesbian orgy (Jim couldn't pass one up if he tried) the gals were enjoying at the club advanced to include him as a sexual partner. There was a lot of rubbing, tonguing, and toy play (even anal toy play) with Nick getting an active ride by Kim that included anal before the facial pop. It was a relatively short scene but very well handled by all involved; providing something for everyone.

Scene Five: Shayla LaVeaux and Jill Kelly, the two babes on the front DVD cover, were up next in a very heated lesbian tryst after hearing another of Nick's entertaining songs. The ladies were in bed with Jill wearing a sweet little outfit and Shayla wearing nothing at all to cover her goodies (just some stockings). It was one of those nice gal lays where the ladies kissed, caressed, and cuddled with some licking to go with it. Fans of foot play will enjoy their extended bout of toe sex too. Yum!

Scene Six: Jill Kelly, needing the manly love of a metrosexual, went for the obvious choice (Kurt Lockwood wasn't in porn at the time, probably working a street corner somewhere picking up men) of Eric Price in his wood working shop. For those are unfamiliar with his leanings, suffice it to say that she liked freaky men and the two were an item for a long time in porn; pairing off so frequently that they were all but inseparable. They had a chemistry together that few would deny and the energy between them was almost always high. They orally pleased each other and she took him in both her pussy and ass as a result. He jerked off to her firm ass cheeks while talking dirty, ending the first scene I think I had ever watched of them together when I first watched this one years ago (on tape no less!).

Scene Seven: Shayla LaVeaux, still playing a lovelorn hotty with a growing career, did TT Boy in a motel room where she had turned the tables of sexual promiscuity. They did some oral and an active vaginal romp, leading to a small mouth pop and facial. It was far too short to fully enjoy but fit the story rather well.

Summary: Not The Lovin' Kind was special to director Jim Holliday for several reasons and he took great care to make it a winner. Those who think the fusion of GOOD music, decent story, and hot sex are something that has only recently taken place might want to check this one out since the songs would easily fit in on just about any C&W or crossover radio stations currently but the sex was also a lot of fun with Shayla giving up her perfect pucker and others displaying just as much energy to warrant a rating of Recommended. In short, Not The Lovin' Kind stood the test of time for me thanks in large part to the technical values combining with the stroke and replay action built in so many years ago. The movie was a side project of Jim with Shayla providing the impetus for him to show his skills in a different manner; clearly thinking ahead by leaving this tribute to his favorite gal that remains a favorite of mine nearly ten years later.
