Audio/Video Quality: The movie was shot on film and at the time, so early in
Michael's career, he was unable to compensate for it. The movie is therefore
grainy to the point that it looked much like a VCD and some of the colors
bled in a few scenes. The audio was generally well done although a few minor
problems popped up there too. The music was interesting and appropriate with
the lead song by a band named Millenium.
Body of Review: Watchers is a story about supernatural forces of good and
evil fighting over a young woman's soul. I'll skip the religious aspects of
it since my background in that area is fairly limited but those who went to
Catholic school as kids will probably recognize much of it, albeit in a porn
twisted manner. The story itself is interesting and it's well cast with
mostly attractive people who enjoy having sex. Fans of features with a plot
and acting will like this one a lot more than raincoaters who burn through
speaking parts with their remote control. I'd say this was designed, like
most of Michael's works, as thinking man's porn. The sex doesn't get in the
way of the story, nor does the story get in the way of the sex (at least too
much). It's good to see a porn movie where the two compliment one another
and this has always been a strong point of his movies. Here's a short
breakdown of the sex scenes:
Scene One: This was a 6 person orgy with Bridgette, Chennin, Pat, Shelby,
Eric and Cheyne in a warehouse. I'm not generally a fan of orgies since they
are tough to get right and this was a well recorded/edited scene but not
quite right for me. It had anal (remember, Bridgette was in it) and an ATM
(ass to mouth) for fans of such action. It wasn't bad but not great
either.
Scene Two: The following scene had Katja in it. She was great but then,
isn't she always! Oh yeah, it also had Mr Marcus and Tavalia, both of whom
were swell in their roles here. It's easy to forget about the others when a
favorite is on the screen with them. I liked the front dvd cover so much, I
wish I had a big poster of it for my reviewing room. Sigh! The sex was
hot!
Scene Three: Julie, sporting her then new implants, took on Dillion on a
couch. The two played cops who were surprisingly likeable together. She's a
great looking gal who has always been enjoyable to watch. I'd have preferred
her to stay away from implants but others seem to like them (or require
them) so I'm okay with her choice. The sex was energetic and showed
chemistry between the two.
Scene Four: Katja, again looking quite heavenly for such a little devil,
enjoyed the company of Shay. Fans of toys and beautiful women should note
this scene as one to look for. Personally, I would've liked it to last
another 10 minutes but then, I'm not a porn director who watches how well
the sex works within the constructs of the script like Michael does.
Scene Five: Sydnee, a long time hotty from Texas, had sex with Randy in an
erotic scene on a bed. I wonder if she ever looks bad or like she doesn't
have something going on in a scene as she looked as good as always. The
condom used detracted from the story a bit (he was an angel after all) but
given the every day realities of porn, it made sense.
Summary: The worse scene had pretty good sex and most of the women looked at
least good here. It's a shame the production values weren't up to par but
Michael's come a long way since then and I'm told he rarely has as much
grain nowadays. The story was also interesting although Randy's acting has
been better before. I'm calling this one a keeper for fans of feature movies. As a side note, I thought the dvd cover looked great!
Note to Sin City: I still hate those forced commercials for phone sex at the
beginning of the movie. I would've liked a longer behind the scenes feature
and more extra's too. Other than my complaints about the limitations of film
as a recording medium and the missing time code, I liked the movie as an
above average feature. Thanks!
