The Movie:

There's not a whole lot of plot to discuss when talking about Allen Stuart's Cheap Thrills - the premise is very simple. Rhonda Jo Petty, Heather Thomas, Marita Ekberg and Susan Hart are all auditioning for the same modeling gig. What we don't know going in is that these four minx's have just gotten back from a weekend away together and spent the entire time fucking and sucking their way through whoever they could get their hands on.

While sitting in the waiting room waiting for their shot at the big time, they walk down memory lane together and relive the weekend's exploits but once that's done and they find out the results of the agency's decision, the four girls are forced into action of the carnal kind so that one of them can land the job they all crave.

Chapter 1 – Rhonda Jo Petty, George Payne, Mystery Guy: This one kicks into high gear right off the bat as Rhonda is naked in bed with the two guys. It's a shame that this wasn't shot on film as the video quality sucks and there are some good scenes in here that would benefit from the better picture quality that the format has to offer, but what are you gonna do…

The DVD

Video:

This one was shot on video back in the early eighties and it shows. The image is soft throughout and very hazy looking. Unfortunately it lacks any real definition or fine detail and while it's watchable, it's certainly no more or no better than that. If you're familiar with how vintage porn has been represented for the most part at this point in DVD history, you'll know what you're getting into but don't expect this one to have the same king of clarity or detail or excellent picture quality as, say, Pirates. Also worth mentioning is that the good ol' Video X Pix bug is back on this release, present about once every fifteen minutes or so in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack is a little muffled and not of the best quality, but again, it's taken from a tape source so the limitations of the older technology are going to be there when that's the case. Dialogue is pretty easy to understand, however, and the background music comes through reasonably clear. There aren't a lot of sound effects used in the film, mostly just some random moaning and groaning during the action scenes and these are handled just fine, as are the talkier bits of the movie.

Extras:

The standard Video X Pix extras are on this release. Two trailers are included, the first is for Blue Jeans and the second one is for Female Athletes. The same still gallery that was on the other two discs released in conjunction with this one, consisting of about thirty images from various period pornos, is also included.

Final Thoughts:

Again, the video quality could have been better and more extras are always welcome (why don't old vintage smut films ever get any real extras?) but Cheap Thrills is hotter than the average smut film of the era and the movie benefits from some good humor, a very solid cast, and a few stand out scenes. Recommended for fans of the old school way, everyone else would be better served with a rental.
