Audio/Video Quality: Jack's POV 17 was offered up in a choice of formats; the standard definition version in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen using a 480p resolution MPEG-2 encoding or a Blu-ray 1080p resolution AVC encoded version as shot by director Robby D. for Digital Playground. The director has been responsible for a wealth of excellent movies in recent years (though some admittedly weaker efforts too), generally using the alias of "Jack" to project his mindset into various situations. This was another in the series that focused on POV (point of view) camera angles, allowing the viewer to imagine they are the ones involved with the ladies. The scenes appeared to be shot with a single camera and minimal lighting, some shadows entering into the picture in every scene but the majority of time showing that the crew behind the camera knew what they were doing. Rather than try for technical excellence this time, Robbie appeared to go for a more spontaneous look, a number of glitches left into the picture seemingly on purpose to provide that home movie look he is renowned for shooting. In any case, the SD version of the movie had some compression artifacts and what appeared to be edge enhancement, the moiré barely noticeable though the attempts at shooting from a dark room into bright light bothersome but Nick "The Man" P. (credited again as "Not Nick P. XXX) tidied it up really well. Still, not everyone prefers the flat lighting other companies offer up so this would be for those of you that want more texture in your porn. The video bitrate varied significantly but when I spot checked it, the SD numbers typically bounced around the 5.7 Mbps mark, often going higher or somewhat lower for those who care, while the Blu-ray title clocked in routinely with a 17.2 Mbps video bitrate. The audio was presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital English with a 48 kHz sampling rate and 640 Kbps bitrate (in the Blu-ray version; 448 Kbps in standard definition), none of the vocals showing any separation though the score seemed to during the opening and closing. I did notice that some portions were substantially louder than others so be prepared with remote in hand (like most folks) to compensate, the balance off in other areas as well.

Body of Review: Digital Playground is perhaps the most successful production company in porn these days, their winning formula of letting director Robby D. loose to unleash his creative perversions in various incarnations working more often than not. That they have also been the only company to fully embrace the advances in technology such as Blu-ray sure hasn't hurt my opinion of them either, regardless of reported sales. Their latest title making it my way was the recently released Jack's POV 17, the movie coming out days before this review was set to run. Like previous volumes in the series, this one features a contract hotty, this time the sexy little Selena Rose, the cover advertising this as her first point of view movie. As expected, most of the footage shot was done in the point of view fashion so the viewer could fantasize about boning the babes himself, though there was again a departure from holding too strictly to this approach for those purists demanding 100% POV. In any case, with a cast including Chanel Preston, Tori Black, Charley Chase, and even former contract performer Janie Summers in addition to Selena, there was hope this would turn out as strong as some of the better efforts in the series to date, the bets that this fuck flick would trip my trigger remained very high. Here's a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used for those still interested:

In short, Jack's POV 17 had a lot of POV fuck for the buck and while it might not have even tried to surpass competitors in terms of quantity of footage, it gave a good showing for a title emphasizing a variety of ladies getting in, getting fucked, and getting out rather than linger with tease or lots of positions. I definitely appreciated the high definition version better and Sasha Bleu, now known as company contract performer Selena Rose, appeared to enjoy her scene with an active bout of boning, her potential for even better scenes quite high. I also appreciated the attempts to make the colors looked more saturated at times, the washed out look presumably due to the down-conversion of the extreme resolution provided by the RED One camera system finally being addressed, albeit not perfectly.
