Audio/Video Quality: Phallic Angel was presented in non-anamorphic widescreen as directed by The Baron for Slave 2 Lust Productions and distributed by Lava Releasing. The lighting was moody and dark, apparently in an attempt to convey a sense of something rarely found in modern porn. Whether or not this is a good idea is strictly a personal taste issue although I was not a fan of it. The fleshtones looked reddish, the candle light (as well as the other lighting mind you) was low enough that grain and video noise became an issue, and the limited camera angles did not enhance the look of the women. Were the movie more ambitious, I'm sure this style might've worked better but as it was presented; it lacked enough to keep me interested. The stereo audio was basic with the vocals minimal and the music fairly generic. There was some hollow background noise but the audio was not the focus of much attention.

Body of Review: In my quest to acquaint myself with some smaller companies making porn these days, I ran across a little production outfit known as Lava Releasing. The title that caught my eye was Phallic Angel, due in large part to the covergal in her angel outfit having some decent appeal. Angels as a theme in porn goes way back to the early days of the industry and even early erotica seemed to use them to instill a sense of unfulfilled lust (perhaps regarding the desire to have the unobtainable). The back cover copy mentioned some lame babbling that make my reviews look almost intelligent by comparison but once I get curious, I see my thirst for knowledge through. Sadly, the movie was fairly generic as a blowjob only release with some pretentious psychobabble to tie the six scenes together. Like other blowjob releases of late, the action had a number of women take care of their male partners; as in Iron Head 4, Big Gulps 1, Orally Challenged, and the accomplished Feeding Frenzy series, but the camera angles were so limited this time and the action varied so little that it left me cold.

Every scene began like this: an attractive gal (Silky Thumper, I believe) would walk a gal over to a male sitting on a throne of sorts. The darkened room was lit by candles and Silky would kneel beside her female friend to coax her onto more energetic action. The blowjobs themselves were the mechanical type with lots of handjob action on guys dressed up in light bondage gear, including a silly mask and gauntlets. There was much less variation on the theme here than in most such series and the running length of the movie was so light that I almost thought I got a preview copy by mistake.

So, if the action was weak and the technical matters unappealing, what did I like about the DVD? Well, several of the women were very attractive and had the kind of potential I like to see. I'm not overly familiar with them so that factor was cool too but the bottom line was that they didn't show the kind of chemistry, passion, and even energy that I want to see in my performers. I'm certain that the oral they bestowed upon their partners felt as good as most blowjobs do and some of you will like the production values as a change from the flat, near clinical, lighting you'll find elsewhere. I know that sounds like a cop out but the fact is, despite the limitations of the DVD and the sex, some of you will find this interesting to watch (far more so than I did).

Summary: Phallic Angel was one of those titles that I felt was a work in progress more than a complete release. Coming in at about 75 minutes and six blowjobs, there wasn't much fuck for the buck compared to the rest of the pack of similar oral shows available today. Given the cost of this one, I found it tough to get into and there really wasn't much worth watching for me but those of you that don't see a lot of porn may see it differently. I was left wondering if the other releases by Lava Releasing were better than this one or if they were similarly distressed in terms of poor value and spotty production values but I've seen worse in my time. I'm going to rate this one as a Skip It as much because it doesn't compare favorably to other such shows as the value it didn't offer but if you're a completist for some of the cast, I could see checking it out before dismissing it sight out of hand.
