The Movie:

Carbongirl is weird. It is. It’s really weird. Not in a bad way, mind you – it’s actually very interesting, but this isn’t your normal porno movie, not by a long shot. There’s a narrative here of sorts, in which Belladonna plays a doctor/toymaker with the rest of the cast acting as her creations. It’s all shot to look like a 30s era production and the score reflects that as well, creating an interesting contrast between old school filmmaking technique (rendered through digital technology) and the hardcore fucking that makes up ninety five percent of the movie. The feature is shot with loads of interesting style and features some pretty unique props, particularly in the last scene in which Belladonna is using Doc Johnson sex toys molded after herself. See? That’s kinda weird. It’s hot and all, don’t get me wrong, but it is weird, and so is the rest of the movie, from the makeup and doll effects to the whole tone of the picture in general but damn if it isn’t one of the most interesting gonzo pictures to come along in some time.

So without further ado…

Chapter 1 – Monique Alexander And Sammie Rhodes: Belladonna, as the doctor, is painting the faces of Monique and Sammie, her latest creations who are here made to look like porcelain dolls, albeit ones with dirty, cracked faces. As the two become animated, they touch each other, rubbing one another’s pussy’s quite curiously. This shot on digital video production looks pretty clean presented here in a reasonably stable anamorphic 1.78.1 widescreen presentation – though the whole thing has been given a sort of sepia tone effect. There is some mild edge enhancement in a couple of spots and a noticeable bit of mpeg compression evident throughout in the darker scenes. Skin tones don’t look natural at all here, they look pale and white but that’s the point. The compositions are dead on and the framing looks really good, and aside from the fact that this digital video production looks like a digital video production and as such suffers from the minor defects usually associated with the format, everything looks as good as you’d realistically expect it to.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track is quite sufficient. The dialogue comes through cleanly and clearly as do all of the moans and groans, though they aren’t all that high in the mix – this is part of the aesthetic, as the music seems to be what Belladonna wanted up front. The levels are otherwise well balanced and there are no problems with background hiss or distortion.

Extras:

The first disc in this two disc set contains some interesting menus, scene selection, a cast list, some weblinks and trailers for three other Belladonna/Evil Angel releases. The second disc contains the same extras less the trailers and plus a lengthy behind the scenes documentary that clocks in at just a few minutes shy of three and half hours! There’s a very laid back atmosphere to this piece that really goes into quite a bit of detail about what the performers were trying to get across and what Belladonna’s directorial style is like. We see the different girls in and out of makeup and working on their wardrobe and trying out different props and toys.

Final Thoughts:

Definitely one of the more interesting and creative gonzo efforts of 2010, Carbongirl might be a bit too dark for some tastes but anyone who appreciates seeing something a little different from the norm ought to give it a look. The art direction is excellent, the sex is creative, interesting and steamy and the cast is quite solid too. It’s all set to an interesting soundtrack and makes great use of some solid visuals as well. There’s really only one extra of any substance here, but it’s pretty massive and basically delivers everything you could want to know about what it was like on set. Highly recommended.
