Extra's: For me, the best extra was the 6 minute long bonus scene between Mysti May and Denise K. that started off as a striptease act but evolved into something more. It was far too short to make up for the length of the movie but it was still a nice addition to the fun of the DVD. The next best extra was the 20 minute long Behind the Scenes feature by JJ Mayan and Wild Bill Kelso. It had a lot of extra hardcore footage deleted from the scenes of the movie, some interview material, and showed a bit of the others assisting in the movie, including Nicole Sheridan and Voodoo (both seen taking on a variety of projects these days for a diverse number of companies). There were a bunch of trailers, a photogallery, and a true double sided DVD cover with one side showing gals dressed and the other providing a naughtier version for those who care.

Audio/Video Quality: Night Nurses was presented in the same 1.85:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color it was shot in by director James Avalon for release by Penthouse Variations; one of the newcomers on the block in the porn industry. The colors were slightly faded and the lighting not optimal this time but the sex was heated enough and the humor good enough to distract me more often than not. The colors were overly saturated and there was some grain due to the lighting but in all, I didn't mind the difficulties encountered on my viewing of the show. There weren't any compression artifacts observed but there was some shimmer in a few scenes due to the outfits worn by some of the cast. The 2.0 Dolby Digital English audio was okay but there wasn't a lot of separation or dynamic range to speak of and the vocals seemed somewhat hollow at time. The music was decidedly loud and distorted, making it the worst part of the movie other than the limited amount of fuck for the buck.

Body of Review: James Avalon was one of my favorite directors at RLD last year with a handful of wonderfully interesting movies under his belt for them before the changes took place to dismiss most of the directing staff. I spoke with him in January and it seemed the writing was on the wall but he made plans to work elsewhere and the result is his latest effort for Penthouse Variations called Night Nurses. The movie was a short series of vignettes with a nurse them focusing the thematic issues with men getting into erotic situations with the ladies. My biggest concern of the movie was how short it was (under 75 minutes) though some decent extras helped make up for it but if you have a nurse fetish, this might appeal to you a lot. I've long been a fan of the Penthouse Variations magazine (though it has been years since I read it) and the feel of the scenes was not that much like the letters of old that I recall but still managed to provide something off the beaten path to enjoy. If you're still interested, here's a quick look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that no condoms were used:

Scene One: Mysti May, one of my favorite screamers of the last year, and hot Europe babe Denise K., were up first as part of the cure for studly Tommy Gunn. Bonus Scene: Mysti May and Denise K., two very attractive ladies in porn, were up in a short bonus scene in what appeared to be a boiler room for an old industrial building as they sashayed in their nurse outfits (punctuated by reddish undies). I like tease scenes and they played well as lipstick lesbians too but they never really had intercourse (no tongues, toys or fingers) so suffice it to say that as long as you don't expect much, you'll be okay.

Summary: Night Nurses by director James Avalon for release by Penthouse Variations was not the best work out of the director that I've seen in the past year but it did show that he has a tremendous amount of untapped potential to try things outside of the gonzo material he was shooting for RLD. I know he has been around for a long time shooting a wide variety of porn but it should be said that the elements of the movie combined well enough for me to rate as a Rent It but given the shortness of the movie and the music busting my head wide open, I didn't think Night Nurses was nearly as good as James was capable of giving his fans. Perhaps in future releases, he'll be allowed to pull out the stops again, maybe even allowed to use some of the letters to Penthouse as the inspiration for his scenes.
