The Movie:

When the movie begins, Abigail Clayton, playing a nineteen year old wannabe actress named Thomasina, and her boyfriend Ken Scudder are fooling around. Featuring some nice location footage of Los Angeles circa 1978, this Alan B. Colberg directed picture doesn't break much new ground in the plot department but it's a reasonably well directed picture with some better than average performances from an A-list cast of late seventies adult film superstars. Abigail Clayton and Annette Haven both look truly beautiful here, and they simply ooze sex appeal whenever they shed their duds for the camera. The story is a typical 'want to make it as an actress' story where the heroine gets used a couple of times before wising up and figuring out how to play the game but the cast make this one enjoyable. The sex scenes are well shot and while they might not be as plentiful as other XXX films of the era, there's a welcome chemistry to them that makes them more erotic than they would be otherwise.

The Video:

Naked Afternoon is presented fullframe in what looks to be its original aspect ratio. There are mild compression artifacts evident throughout the movie and there are some noticeable macro-blocking issues as well. The colors are off in tint and hue and everything looks very soft. Detail is washed out and two or three times during playback a 'Copyright 2008 VCX' bug appears on the bottom of the screen. This interlaced tape sourced transfer is hardly impressive.

The Audio:

The English language Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack does fair a little bit better than the video on this release, though it too leaves plenty of room for improvement. There's background hiss throughout the but once the movie starts you won't have any problem following it. Make no mistake, this mix doesn't sound good, but at least you can understand the performers. Faint praise, mind you, but it gets the job done.

The Extras:

VCX have supplied a few minor supplements on this release starting with some bonus scenes, the first of which is from Eruption and features John Holmes getting a blowjob. A giant 'ERUPTION' logo appears on the bottom of the screen for the duration, which is really annoying. The second bonus scene is from Too Hot To Touch and it features Jamie Gillis fucking a cute blonde ski bunny in his office, pulling out just in time to blow a load on her face. The third bonus scene is taken from Perfect Partners, an eighties era shot on video movie. This scene features Amber Lynn and Joey Silvera who go at it in the bedroom for a bit until she sucks him to a finish. The final bonus scene is from Suzie Superstar and it stars Shauna Grant and Ron Jeremy. Shauna takes off her top and drops to her knees to give Ron head. She sucks him off for a while and he strokes off onto her ample and lovely cleavage.

Also included are trailers for Extreme Facials, Suzie Superstar, Expose Me Now, and Eruption in addition to chapter selection and some really ugly animated motion menus.

Overall:

A well acted and well shot porno with a plot, Naked Afternooon is a fun vintage smut movie with some good performances and nice location shooting. VCX's DVD isn't particularly impressive but the movie is worth a watch and so its recommended for classic smut fans for that reason alone.
