Audio/Video Quality: Fifty Shades of Grey was presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen as shot by director Jim Powers for Smash Pictures. The lighting by R. Dogg was appropriate for each scene, varying to meet the needs of the story. The editing by Hollywood Max was well done too, the cuts made to meet the story needs once again. The composition of the camera angles provided a solid mix of shots too, some quick edits on the bondage gear leaving me wanting more at times but well within logical boundaries for this kind of show. The audio was presented in a standard 2.0 Dolby Digital, 192 Kbps, the musical portions of the movie were mixed with the vocals nicely, few ambient sounds provided to give the scenes depth but ambitious sound is rare in porn features these days, the overall effect of the technical qualities being that they worked at making the story work better rather than just imitate the mainstream feature the show was based on.

Body of Review: Jim Powers has been making some waves with his couples porn flicks at Smash Pictures of late. Later this month, he releases Fifty Shades of Grey A XXX Adaptation, a porn adaptation of the bestselling novel making some waves in the literary world. The original book started off as a piece of fan fiction, some of the details changed to make it commercially viable. The story is reminiscent of “Story of O”, the subtext of BDSM material sounding hotter when described than the actual book presents it. My girlfriend fell asleep reading the original but given the right adaptation, the premise certainly had ample room to stoke the fires in a porno. The upside to the movie was the sheer amount of sexual content revolving around leads Allie Haze and Ryan Driller, the downside that the depictions of BDSM were definitely on the tame side (in fairness, not departing from the source material a whole lot, or at least what I read of it). Still, fans of Allie Haze will want a copy as a “must have” and as a BDSM-lite fuck flick, it had a lot going for it.

The back cover described the movie like this: “When an inexperienced college student, Anastasia Steele, meets an extremely wealthy and handsome young business tycoon, Christian Grey, a whirlwind romance encompassing the kinkiest of pleasures soon ensues. Christian, (RYAN DRILLER) takes the inexperienced virgin Anastasia, (ALLIE HAZE) into a world BDSM roll playing. Anastasia is completely swept up and scared as she has never experienced anything like this. She spent her last four years reading English literature while living vicariously through her outgoing roommate Kate (ALEXIS FORD). What made her charming prince like this? Was it the training in masochism he received at the hands of an older woman Mrs. Robinson (JULIA ANN)? How many shades of the object of her love must she push through to find true love? Based upon the best selling series of books that has swept the world and coined the new term "mommy porn", FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, a XXX ADAPTATION puts the kinky fantasies that you only imagined into vivid color.” Here’s a brief look at the scenes by cast and action, noting that some condoms were used for those still interested:

Scene One: Allie Haze, the attractive starlet featured on the front cover, was up first on a bed with Ryan Driller. This ended with a pop shot too before picking up in a darkened bedroom turned dungeon, Ryan using a riding crop on Allie as she was secured by bonds both over her head and her feet. Summary: Fifty Shades of Grey by director Jim Powers for Smash Pictures has some potential to interest a wide variety of newcomers into the world of porn due to the ever so slightly kink factor provided in the scenes. As with the source trilogy, it starts off on the light side, some interludes by hotty Julia Ann and another by Alexis Ford contributing something to the mix. Unlike most modern porn, the show has a lot of material between Allie Haze and Ryan Driller engaging in less than full sex scenes, for the purposes of this review, I kept the related trysts together for convenience more than anything else (not every session of fucking led to a pop shot either). Rating a show like this is difficult to do right too, devotees of BDSM will likely find it too watered down while those that hate such practices might see it as too disturbing, some portions of the production coming off as rushed (the ball, a few of the partial scenes between Allie and Ryan). In all though, it has some replay value and opens the door for even better adaptations of “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed”, meriting a rating of Recommended for your average couples audience, just adjust the rating according to your own tastes as you would with anything else. In short, Fifty Shades of Grey A XXX Adaptation did not stray too far from the original source material so the slavering fan girls devoted to the erotic trilogy might find it worth looking into, the lack of certain porn conventions at times proving interesting to me as a direction well worth exploring but I reiterate that fans of Allie Haze are going to want a copy for their collections.
