Audio/Video Quality: Man Vs. Pussy was presented in a very appealing 1.78:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen color as shot by directors Spock Buckton, Brian Bangs, and Lee Roy Myers for Good Night Media using the MPEG-2 codec for the standard definition release (using a standard 480 resolution). The lighting was usually optimal and it generally limited the grain, video noise, and shadows substantially thanks in no small part to Lee’s technical expertise combined with the witty art direction of his two peers. The composition of the shots was usually flattering to the ladies and given the quality of the cast, this made it more enjoyable too. The fleshtones were generally accurate and the bitrate hovered in the mid 4.4 Mbps area so it looked pretty solid but this being a reality television styled comedic enterprise, it also looked rough in just the right places too. There were no compression artifacts and the visuals were generally handled pretty well here. The audio was presented in a 2.0 Dolby Digital English using the standard 192 Kbps bitrate and 48 kHz sampling rate of most productions. The vocals were easy to hear and while the aural components were modest this time, it worked given the type of cheese ball fuck flick this was meant to be. The music by Kevin McLeod was a step in the right direction too, supporting the story elements rather than tossed in at the last minute in a frenzied post production blaze.

Body of Review: Spock Buckton and Brian Bangs have successfully carved out a great niche in porn with their amazing website but what really stands out about the dup is their transition to making movies. Porn is full of people credited as “director” as a means of garnering additional sales or critical accolades, most of the time said people having about as much to do with technical or artistic decisions as the janitor. This does not appear to be the case with the Popporn guys, every movie they make providing ample evidence that they were an important part of the production. Now that they have teamed up with parody guru Lee Roy Myers in the form of Good Night Media, I have hope that the reliance on parodies will fall to the wayside in favor of creativity and imagination, all three men proving they aren’t interested in churning out assembly line porn that is increasingly ignored by people still willing to pay for their smut.

In a collaborative effort, the trio have skipped the parody genre in favor of a hybrid approach of making a movie inside a movie while combining elements of reality television, the resulting movie called Man Vs. Pussy. Going into the movie, I found that there was a lot of positive industry buzz thanks in no small part to the directors but also the cast who have suggested they had a “kick ass” time making the show. The movie amounts to a challenge made to performer Anthony Rosano to have five full sex scenes in 12 hours lest he be labeled for life as someone who couldn’t hack it, made all the more difficult by the constant jeers of those around him. As much as that sounds as cheesy as any of the now classic Jonathan Morgan movies from 10+ years ago, it would have totally failed under the guidance of flunky studio directors or the usual hacks associated with budget conscious porn. Instead, the trio set out with an admittedly low budget but made up for it with the kind of creativity that most still left in the industry have discarded of late, the resulting movie so completely entertaining that it appealed to a wide range of friends I showed it to (from the jaded reviewer, me, to a couple of folks so new to porn that they think everything they see on screen is “real”). Typically, this means that the sex is watered down and lame to the point where it would suit the studios better known for contract women but given a cast including Alexis Texas, Charley Chase, April O’Neil, Kagney Linn Karter, and Cherry Torn; I have to admit they made it work once again. The back cover stated it like this: “What would happen if one man was challenged to shoot five individual sex scenes (and five loads of cum) in twelve hours with five of porn's biggest stars? I’ll be the first to admit that lead male Anthony is a guy that I usually associate with his award winning feature roles rather than his sexual prowess but he rose to the challenge here as did all those involved in making the movie so I awarded it a rating of Xcritic Pick. The sex was not your typically “gonzo stroke” material, and the feature elements were more like those seen in “reality television” than the fast forward fodder I’m used to seeing in porn, but the manner in which this was crafted to serve a wider audience was sweet! That said, Man Vs. Pussy showed that new studios truly have something more to offer than just imitating the big boys, Good Night Media already beating them at their own game by providing quality porn over generic offerings few of us care to see so give it a look.
