Director Jack The Zipper continues to sail into very strange territory with this latest entry, Blacklight Beauty - call it 'alt porn' (though, again, that label sucks!). It stars an attractive cast of established and up and coming ladies (look for a lot of the Burning Angel crew here), features some creative set design and some hot sex, a lot of strange ideas and bizarre shots, and is at least trying for something different. Though there are mistakes made along the way (clowns are not hot, they're fucking scary!) , the good outweighs the bad – here's how and why:

Scene 1 – Allie Sinn And Alec Knight: There's not a lot of lead up to this scene, it more or less starts right away with Allie looking very good and very naked! They fondle each other a bit and then she drops to her knees and gives him a blowjob. The clowns are freaky – clowns should not appear in porn, in fact, for the good of the world they should probably all be exterminated – and there are a couple of scenes without come shots which might be a problem for some. Other than that, however, this is a fun and freaky smut movie with hot little punker/alt/whatever girls doing their thing and looking good. Zipper experiments with the structure and the cinematography so sometimes it gets a little odd in terms of the visuals but that appealed to this reviewer's sensibilities a fair bit as at least it was something a little out of the ordinary and different.

The DVD

Video:

This shot on video production looks pretty clean presented here in a reasonably stable 1.33.1 fullscreen presentation though it does need to be said that some intentional post production degradation has been done to the image to make it look dirty in spots, especially during the black and white bits. There is some mild edge enhancement in a couple of spots and a noticeable bit of mpeg compression evident in some of the darker colors and the blacks but these aren't a big deal. What is really noticeable, however, is that a couple of scenes look really jagged. It's hard to tell is this is really severe edge enhancement or over filtering or compression but it's definitely there and there are spots where, particularly along the body lines of the performers, lines aren't smooth but rough looking. Skin tones look nice and natural, the compositions are dead on, and aside from the fact that this digital video production looks like a digital video production and as such suffers from the minor defects usually associated with the format and the aforementioned 'jaggies' (which only affect some scenes) the movie looks alright.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound track is quite sufficient. The dialogue comes through cleanly and clearly as do all of the moans and groans. The soundtrack is mixed in properly at a respectable level most of them time but there are a few spots where the music is definitely louder than it needed to be and as such it slightly overshadows the speaking parts when they do occur. Bass response is nice and lively and overall, for a porno movie, this is a better than average effort. A less impressive but nice Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track is also included.

Extras:

The extra for this release are all found on the second disc. In the Stag Reel section we find some really nice footage of Riley strutting for the camera and looking hot as well as some footage of Charlie Laine doing the same thing. Charlotte shows up and follows suit and it's all really nice, hot, footage of the girls doing their thing that's subsequently ruined by the appearance of another fucking clown. There's twenty-minutes plus worth of footage in here, a lot of which includes the girls masturbating (Charlie looks fantastic in here).

There's also a half hour Making Of Blacklight Beauty featurette here that's worth taking a look at if you're at all interested in how a porno movie it put together. Final Thoughts:

If you've enjoyed any of the Burning Angel stuff or some of the more recent Pulse titles like Naked And Famous then the odds are pretty good that you'll dig Blacklight Beauty a fair bit. It's a really slick blend of over the top style and hot, hardcore sex. The clowns, well, they wouldn't have been missed to be honest but the rest of this package is quality stuff. Recommended.
