Audio/Video Quality: "A" Is For Asiawas presented in the usual 1.33:1 ratio full frame color it was shot in by director Bud Lee for NuTech Digital. It was far from his best work and seeing as how the movie is about ten years old, it looks even worse by today's standards. Here's what I said about it years ago: "Sadly, both were lacking. The audio was low, had a lot
of background noise, and made fair use of music. The video had shimmer,
artifacts, was often too dark, seemed to have a green tint much of the time,
and generally made me think that it was made on a shoestring budget and a
rush through it mentality."

Body of Review: There are times when a guy follows his crotch rather than his intellect (some would say this is an hourly thing; we call those people females) and he disregards the advice of one friend and follows that of another. Such was the case with "A" Is For Asia, a movie notable in that it starred Asia Carrera in her first anal scenes. Asia has left the business and titles like this are rare as hen's teeth so I bought the DVD in hopes that the guy I bought it from was wrong about it (and that the other friend of the time wasn't such a shill). Needless to say, when the crotch rules the mind, you end up sucking down a lousy DVD. Here's what I said about it years ago: "The movie is essentially a showcase project for the lovely
and talented Asia Carrera. While the subject matter may not have been quite as
personal as her favorite project, Appassionata , it seemed to me that she was telling her fans something (and Bud,
her husband, along with her). In any case, this is yet another movie about
the behind the scenes workings of a porn couple. Let there be no doubt that true fans of Asia Carrera will find this one well worth their time and money but anyone else will likely find it an exercise in frustration since the talented cast were not used to full effect. In this sense, some of the reviews are dead on accurate as the limitations of the movie were plentiful, no matter how much I wanted to like and enjoy it. The movie has 6 sex scenes and includes Asia's first anal scenes-that's
right, she had two of them here. Asia is not known for anal scenes so this
DVD is a must have if you are a fan of hers. Most of the movie is straight
and oral sex with a couple of lesbian scenes tossed in for good measure.
Here's a breakdown of the scenes: "

Scene One: Asia Carrera, on a porn film set, took on Marc Wallice and TT Boy. The sex was
somewhat weak and the camera work below par but it could've been worse. It
was notable for the double facial which is rare in Asia movies.

Scene Two: Kylie Ireland, when she was still fairly new to the business, had sex
with Felecia and Caressa Savage in a dressing room. They used their tongues and a
large dildo and had a good time. I would have liked it better if the scene
wasn't interrupted so often but Kylie looked majorly hot (although, to be
fair, she looks even better in some of her latest movies).

Scene Three: Asia Carrera and Jonathan Morgan had a good scene on their bed which included
anal and a facial. I liked this scene almost as much as the last one and
more than the hotter ending scene as the two seemed to work well
together.

Scene Four: Anna Malle, that twisted hotty with an attitude, took on Jonathan Morgan on a porn
set. She seemed to be too much for the guy to handle which isn't that
unusual-she's a sexual dynamo when turned on.

Scene Five: Anna Malle did her friend Bridgette Monroe by the pool. The scene should've
been longer and the editing lowered the heat a lot but it wasn't too bad.

Scene Six: Asia Carrera and Tom Byron go at it on a couch on the porn set. There was a lot
of toy use here-Asia took two toys at a time before allowing him into her
ass (with a condom)-and I admit the scene was very well done. I thought the
chemistry between Asia and Tom was different than the chemistry she shared
with Jonathan but the tension was greater too.

Summary: "A" Is For Asia was worth a rating of Rent It for most people and a must have for devoted fans of Asia Carrera. My original assessment might've been a bit off but in general, I stand behind it even today: " The movie's technical problems prevent me from telling everyone to
rush out and buy a copy unless they are major fans of Asia's like I am. The
interview alone, where she talks about herself on the vocal track while she
is walking up stairs, putting makeup on, and other "real people" activities
had enough to keep me going for awhile and the anal action, of which I'm not
a big fan, was different enough to make me keep this one. Due to the price this one sold at (it's now out of print) it's tough to tell you to stay away from it even though it
has such flaws. Asia's many fans should pick this one up while her
detractors should steer clear. I bought my copy used from a friend so I didn't mind it as badly as if I had paid full price but it wasn't the best Asia Carrera movie I had seen at that point in time. Note to NuTech: I know it's easier to through something on DVD and reap a profit instead of remastering something and doing a decent job but Asia will
likely have a long term fan base who will appreciate efforts to go beyond
bare minimum transfers. Thanks!"

This Don Houston "retro-review" was written long ago before the so-called Professor of Porn had much experience writing reviews. Since that time, he has found NuTech Digital to have a lot of good releases and seen more porn than almost anyone reviewing on the internet. Keep in mind that his comments accurately reflected his fresh viewpoint of the time he first saw the movie.
