Ever notice how many anti-porn people turn out to be really sick fucks? Well, today’s story proves that theory even more.
Robert Morris, the prominent pastor of Gateway Church, has resigned following allegations of sexual abuse that reportedly occurred between 1982 and 1987. The resignation comes amid an independent investigation by the law firm Haynes and Boone, commissioned by the church.
Morris, who has been a vocal critic of pornography and has positioned himself as a leading figure in the fight against sexual immorality, admitted to some wrongdoing but has not yet specifically addressed the allegations in detail.
The allegations surfaced over the weekend, with Cindy Clemishire coming forward to accuse Morris of sexual abuse that began when she was 12 years old.
According to Clemishire, the abuse started on Christmas Day 1982, when Morris, a young, newly married pastor, stayed at her family’s home. She recounted the first instance of abuse in an interview with the Wartburg Watch, a blog site focused on evangelical issues.
“When I was in my early twenties, I was involved in inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady in a home where I was staying,” Morris said in a statement to The Christian Post. “It was kissing and petting and not intercourse, but it was wrong. This behavior happened on several occasions over the next few years.”
The elders of Gateway Church issued a statement acknowledging that they were unaware of the full extent of the abuse, believing Morris’s extramarital relationship to have been with a “young lady,” not a 12-year-old child.
“Regretfully, prior to June 14, the elders did not have all the facts of the inappropriate relationship between Morris and the victim, including her age at the time and the length of the abuse,” the statement read.
Morris has been on hiatus and was not scheduled to preach on Sunday. An internal memo from Thomas Miller, an executive team lead pastor at Gateway, was sent to church staff on June 14, informing them of Morris’s “moral failure.”
Clemishire’s attempts to seek justice date back to 2005, when she retained an attorney to file a civil lawsuit. However, Morris’s attorney reportedly suggested that she had brought the abuse upon herself by being “flirtatious.” Clemishire sought $50,000 for counseling costs but was offered $25,000 on the condition of signing a non-disclosure agreement, which she refused.
Morris’s resignation marks a significant moment for Gateway Church, which boasts 100,000 weekly attendees across multiple campuses. Morris’s influence extends beyond his congregation, with his radio show broadcast on thousands of stations worldwide and his television show, Pastor Robert Morris Ministries, reaching a global audience.
The church’s decision to engage an independent law firm for the investigation underscores the gravity of the situation. In their statement, the elders expressed regret over their initial misunderstanding of the nature of Morris’s actions and emphasized their commitment to uncovering the truth.
As the investigation continues, the church community and the broader public will be watching closely to see how Gateway Church handles these serious allegations and what measures will be taken to address the situation comprehensively.
