Oklahoma Senator Dusty Deevers Proposes Sweeping Morality Legislation

Senator Dusty Deevers, R-Elgin, has introduced a series of eight bills aimed at addressing what he describes as a moral crisis in Oklahoma. The legislative package includes measures to criminalize pornography, ban no-fault divorce, and impose stricter penalties for child sexual assault material, among other proposals.

Deevers announced the bills on Tuesday, calling them a necessary step to “restore moral sanity” in the state.

One of the centerpiece measures, Senate Bill 593, seeks to prohibit the creation, distribution, and possession of pornography in Oklahoma. Violators could face up to 10 years in prison, with enhanced penalties of 10 to 30 years for organized pornography trafficking. The bill also escalates penalties for crimes involving child sexual assault material, imposing sentences of up to 50 years for repeat offenders.

“Pornography is both degenerate material and a highly addictive drug,” said Deevers. “It destroys families, warps perceptions of human dignity, and corrodes the moral fabric of society. Any decent society will stand against this plague with the full weight of the law.”

SB550 seeks to outlaw drag performances aimed at children, including events like Drag Queen Story Hour. Under the proposed legislation, performers could face one to five years in prison, while event organizers could receive up to a year behind bars.

“There is perhaps no more glaring and disgusting example of the left’s rejection of morality than pushing sexual content onto children,” Deevers said. “Children should not be exposed to adult cabaret performances.”

Several bills in the package aim to strengthen the institution of marriage and promote two-parent households. SB829 would eliminate no-fault divorce, restricting grounds for dissolution of marriage to abandonment, abuse, adultery, and similar circumstances. The bill also requires at-fault parents to pay restitution into a trust for their children, accessible when they turn 18.

“Marriage vows have become less binding than business contracts,” Deevers said. “This bill promotes a high view of marriage and protects children from the devastating impacts of divorce.”

The proposed Covenant Marriage Act (SB228) would allow couples to opt into a marriage contract that can only be dissolved in cases of abuse, adultery, or abandonment. Couples entering such a union would receive a $2,500 tax credit.

Additionally, the Promote Child Thriving Act (SB328) introduces a $500 tax credit per child for married parents, which increases to $1,000 for children born after the marriage.

“There is no greater factor in a child’s success than being raised in a two-parent household,” Deevers stated. “We must support policies that encourage strong families.”

Deevers is also targeting abortion access with SB456, which seeks to close what he describes as a loophole for self-managed abortions using online-ordered pills. The bill declares that life begins at conception and aims to eliminate any means of terminating pregnancies within the state.

“Pro-life laws mean little if self-managed abortions are allowed to continue,” Deevers said. “This legislation ensures that every preborn child is protected under the law.”

To make adoption more accessible, SB281 introduces tax credits of up to $10,000 for individuals and $50,000 for businesses contributing to adoption-facilitating organizations. Meanwhile, SB736 ensures equal tax benefits for health share ministries, which offer faith-based healthcare plans.

“Every child deserves a family,” Deevers said of the adoption bill. “And families who choose Christ-centered health solutions should not be penalized.”

Deevers’ legislative agenda has drawn sharp criticism from opponents who argue the measures represent government overreach and could infringe on individual freedoms. Critics are particularly concerned about the criminalization of pornography, with some raising questions about enforcement and constitutional challenges.

Deevers, however, dismissed these concerns. “Opposing these evils does not make us extremists; it makes us sane,” he said. “The far-left has normalized a society drowning in moral decay, and it’s time to push back.”

The bills now head to the committee, where they are expected to face rigorous debate. Deevers expressed confidence in their passage, describing the legislation as a “moral imperative.”

“This is about restoring decency, protecting the vulnerable, and ensuring a future where virtue is celebrated over vice,” he concluded. “Oklahoma can and should lead the nation in moral clarity and courage.”
