NEWS & PRESS STRAIGHT

The adult entertainment industry is mourning the loss of Jared Rutter, a venerated journalist and editor who shaped the narrative of the industry for decades. Born on July 28, 1938, Rutter graduated from UCLA before embarking on a career in journalism. He was found on Monday night, December 18, after a wellness check initiated by concerned colleagues. Despite his age, Rutter remained active, contributing to the industry as recently as the week of his passing.

Rutter’s involvement with the adult industry began in the 1980s when he took the helm of Film World Reports, a bi-weekly adult industry newsletter. He led the publication for seven years before transitioning to Knight Publishing, where he spent a decade editing various projects, including Adam Presents Amateur Porn under the pseudonym Harvey Grind, and Adam Magazine. Later, in 2003, Rutter joined AVN as a senior editor, holding the position for four years and leaving an indelible mark during the publication’s peak growth years.

In addition to his editorial accomplishments, Rutter co-founded the X-Rated Critics Organization (XRCO) in 1984 alongside industry legends William Margold and Jim Holliday. Serving as chairman for two decades, Rutter helped elevate XRCO to prominence, recognizing excellence within the industry. In 2004, he passed the reins to Bob Krotts to focus on his work with AVN.

Paul Fishbein, founder of AVN, described Rutter as “a great writer” and a key figure during AVN’s formative years. “He was quiet and unassuming, yet really talented and a super nice man. Jared was a prolific writer, sharp critic, and excellent interviewer,” Fishbein said.

Dan Miller, AVN’s editor-in-chief, praised Rutter’s distinguished voice: “He brought a unique perspective to AVN, whether critiquing major releases or recounting the history of iconic studios like Evil Angel. He was an immense talent and will be missed dearly.”

Peter Warren, managing editor of AVN, reflected on their shared journey: “We joined AVN at the same time in 2003, and while Jared was private, his passion for the industry was evident. It’s bittersweet that one of his final acts was contributing to this year’s AVN Hall of Fame inductee meeting.”

Rutter’s personal connections extended deeply into the industry. XRCO Chairman Bob Krotts, who succeeded Rutter, recalled him as a mentor and friend: “Jared was truly a nice person—mild-mannered, soft-spoken, and always polite. His passion for the industry was unparalleled.”

Iconic performers and industry veterans, including Christy Canyon and Alexandra Silk, remembered Rutter’s kindness and professionalism. Silk shared a poignant memory: “The last time I saw Jared, I hugged him and told him I loved him. We reminisced about old times, and I’ll treasure that moment forever.”

Rutter’s influence extended beyond his editorial work. His efforts to document and celebrate the industry’s achievements helped shape its history and culture. Whether through his writing for Adam Film World, leadership at XRCO, or coverage for AVN, Rutter’s contributions remain an enduring testament to his dedication.

As the industry gathers for the upcoming 2025 AVN Awards and XRCO ceremonies, Rutter’s absence will be keenly felt, but his legacy will undoubtedly be celebrated.

Plans for a memorial service are forthcoming. Those wishing to honor Jared Rutter’s memory are encouraged to support initiatives that continue his mission of documenting and advocating for the adult industry.
