Texas Passes A Law Requiring Strippers To Be 21+

EDITORIAL FEATURES

WHOA. As they would say in Texas. This is a sticky one, I say from my desk, thinking of things I like as sticky.

Texas just passed a law requiring strippers to be at least 21, saying that it's a way to prevent sex trafficking of "CHILDREN." Okay, first of all, it is implying that fully recognized adults, those being 18-20, are now considered children. We all know they are not (although some can behave like them but then again, so can some 40 year olds). The state legislature believes making this requirement will cut down on sex trafficking but where I have a problem is lumping in the terms "children," "sex trafficking," and "stripping" all in the same breath.

While I am completely against human trafficking of any kind, the 18-20 year old sex worker/strippers that this law is snagging, I hope have made a conscious decision to join the ranks of IRL flesh peddlers, showing their bodies for the pleasure of the voyeurs who enjoy looking at a writhing body on stage, never mind grinding on a lap dance. To call them "children" is a dangerous presumption that none of them are adult enough to be strippers.

According to XBIZ, "Many legal-age entertainers during the pandemic were prevented from working at adult venues, seriously jeopardizing their livelihoods, and had looked forward to a return of feature dancing gigs at live venues, including those in Texas."

Now think about that. Pretty much everything was shut down during the pandemic, choking income streams for many, no matter what business they were in. Probably can explain why the membership/creator statistics for OnlyFans shot up significantly. They should be allowed back to their jobs like everyone else.

Back to strippers. Part of me thinks that strippers should wait to be 21 to make the mature decision to peel off their skimpy clothes in public but who am I to judge? I also like the fact that being at least 21 kinda busts the "young teen" fetish, (whoops, did I say that?) that so many men subscribe to. Being a woman of a certain age, I'd frankly like to see women 50+ active in strip joints because, from personal experience, I know young guys love us older women, too. You just don't see us up on stage EVER.

What do you think? I think personal choices can be made for strippers that choose that profession when they are 18+ without legislation saying whether or not they can. Interfering with a job choice shouldn't be mandated by government, no matter what profession you choose.
