An Interview with Comedian Sarah Mowrey Who is Taking Nude Selfies for Charity

Nudes for charity? Finally! I was worried I'd never see the day. Enter Los Angeles-based comedian Sarah Mowrey, a standup comic and podcaster who has started a trend on Twitter of comedians offering their good bits for charity. How it works is that people can send Sarah a receipt of their donation to a charity that helps black communities and Sarah will send them a boobalicious thank you. Sarah was kind enough to speak to us about their experience so far. FLESHBOT: What gave you the idea to fundraise this way?

SARAH MOWREY: I was inspired by a sex worker named Kaylen Ward (or The Naked Philanthropist) who raised a whole bunch of money earlier this year for the Australian bushfires. Someone also pointed out to me that sex workers have been doing this for years which is important to note!

FB: Have you received any backlash?

SM: The backlash has honestly been minimal. One dude @replied my own topless picture back to me which felt disgusting and violating. His twitter account got suspended very quickly which was good. A couple of people said basically that I was setting women’s rights back by doing this. Joke's on her - I’m non-binary baby! 

FB: Has anyone sent you nudes in response to yours?

SM: There were a couple of people who asked me for receipts in exchange for dick pics which I didn’t participate in because the process of marking down donations and sending titty pictures is a lot less horny than you would think. I am basically a data entry clerk for titties now. But I also donated to charities separately from dudes trying to entice me with dick pics. 

FB: How do you feel about starting this trend? You have a lot of other people doing the same thing and crediting you as inspiration!

SM: I think it became an amazing opportunity to raise a lot of money and I love that other folks jumped in alongside me to raise money. It all happened really quickly and I didn’t expect it.  My hope is that no one who donated for pictures goes “job well done!” and clocks out so to speak. It’s on all white people to educate ourselves and become anti-racist. Buying or sending nudes shouldn’t be anyone’s only contribution.

FB: What are your feelings on sex-work in general?

SM: I fully support sex work and sex workers. Full stop. Findom twitter is some of the most brilliant shit I’ve seen in my entire life and I truly admire them. 

FB: As of now, what is the total you’ve raised?

SM: Personally I’ve raised $20,000 and around $70,000 combined with a few others who have been participating including DeAnne Smith and Courtney Kocak. 

FB: What’s next for you? Anything else you want us to plug?

SM: I’ll probably do a couple more rounds of donations for nudes but right now  I’m focusing on sharing resources because I have gained more followers because of this. Also educating myself and trying to be useful however I can.  I would like to plug a couple things: This is a website of resources and actions we can take from petitions to organizations to donate to, to writing emails/making phone calls. This splits donations between 70+ organizations and Black and Pink is a LGBTQIA+ organization that works to abolish prisons.
