R.I.P. Clive McLean

It may be hard to believe given the massive success of Hustler's "Barely Legal" series, but according to a 2001 interview with "gentleman pornographer" and director Clive McLean quoted in his obituary on AVN today, the first title was barely solvent: "It was a big yawn as far as distributors were concerned ... It only went out the door at 700-800, not really good. We had no sales people. But the repeat orders were absolutely astronomical." As far as porn legacies are concerned, McLean's will be tough to beat.
