The paper edition of Playgirl may be bidding us a fond farewell, but it will always live on in our hearts--and thanks to the efforts of diligent archivists, at least a part of Playgirl (i.e., the pictures of naked men) will live on forever in cyberspace, too. The past week has seen many a tribute to Playgirl and for good reason. As sex columnist and Fleshbot Crush Object Jamye Waxman points out, "Playgirl was always built around the idea that women wanted a place where they could proclaim their sexual desires"--an unfortunately all too rare idea in our culture.
Of course, some say that it maybe did more for the sexual desires of gay men than straight women, but that's neither here nor there. It still put forth (and proved) the notion that women did want more than just sexy stories and dirty books, and that porn made for women could be a viable business. And for that, we will always be grateful ... even if Playgirl may not have given ladies exactly what they wanted (coughhardcockscough). Well, nobody's perfect.
