Wooty Woohoo! I’m In A Mainstream Movie!: A Pornstar’s Tale Of Mainstream Crossover

Wooty Woohoo! I’m In A Mainstream Movie!: A Pornstar's Tale Of Mainstream CrossoverIt's funny how sometimes the roles we're best prepared to play are the ones that are against type.

"But wait, Bobbi," I can hear you—yes, all of you—thinking, "you're not one of those girls that does a lot of scripted features. You're more a double penetrated, gonzo kind of gal, and we love you for that."

Well, thanks! Especially for that last part! (Seriously, don't hold back and feel free to shower me with praise anytime you feel like it.) Anyway, an explanation is in order.

I've just found out that I've landed a role in an upcoming movie, "Drive." In a twist worthy of M. Night Shyamalan, it is not a movie about porn, hookers or strippers, nor is it a direct to DVD movie or a movie that will only be seen late night on premium cable channels. It's a real, honest-to-Cthulhu movie adapted from a James Sallis novel of the same name, one that's not in public domain, and it's a screenplay that does not mention "commercial scene" (the euphemism for sex used by the industry's writers) anywhere in the script.

Interested in what it's about? I'll let the IMDB entry speak for me: "A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong."

What's this? Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan, a "Doctor Who" alum, is the lead and Christina Hendricks, the redheaded bombshell from "Mad Men" (that I would so motorboat), are signed onto the project as well? What a twist!

Not that I'm saying Shyamalan is directing it (admit it, "The Sixth Sense" was his best movie and it wasn't that great, either), but I am very excited about who is: Nicolas Winding Refn, who wrote and directed "Bronson," the amazing biopic of Charles Bronson (though probably not the Charles Bronson you're thinking about. This one is an English criminal).

I've always been very vocal about my stance as a pro-sex feminist and the empowerment the female performers have in this industry. But in "Drive," I play the wife that is fucked up in life and trapped in a marriage with an abusive husband. One of the main characters, Bernie Rose (played by the Albert Brooks), who witnesses the fights we have, finally gets fed up and threatens to kill the husband.

So now you're probably all wondering, why they were looking for a porn star, and why was I called back. To be honest, I was wondering that same thing. So, upon my second meeting (a setting with the director), I asked this itching question. You see, the female lead, Blanch, gets a rush from being around criminals. Refn felt none of the girls they'd brought in were a match for the character. He instructed his casting director to look only for strippers, prostitutes and porn stars.

When it comes to those kinds of casting demands, there's something to be said about the entertainment industry being based in Los Angeles. However, in mean time, Refn cast Mulligan as the female lead—and I don't blame him, she's breathtakingly unique.

What Refn found intriguing was that I do not dress like a porn star when I'm off the clock. I thought I was nothing the movie called for—but in fact, he told me in that meeting that the other girls who read for the role left nothing to the imagination. What impressed him was that I looked against type and was against type in every way.

That's how I've always composed myself in the adult industry—literate and approachable, yet committed to this business and proud of my hardcore body of work. Great art comes from dichotomies like those. I believe Refn saw that playing me against type would give him the character he wanted.
