Since tomorrow is Independence Day, we figured now would be a good time to pay tribute to the stars and stripes and stripped down bodies of the United States of America. We can't celebrate as much as we should with just two films, but we think these do a darn good job of representing what we're about.
1. An American Affair: Oh yeah, dudes, the year is 1963 and a teenaged boy named Adam Stafford is hating his life. That all changes when a stunning thirty-something blonde named Catherine Caswell (Gretchen Mol!) moves in next door and accidentally reveals her naked self to Adam. Soon he's getting all up in her business, steaming her mail open, reads her diary, and little by little figures out that she has some connection with the CIA, anti-Castro Cubans, and even JFK! So, just to recap what we have here, we're working with conspiracy theories, government invading the lives of normal citizens, America in the '60s, adultery, the Girl Next Door, and the confusing sexual angst of a young man. If that's not America, we don't know what is! Look for Gretchen Mol (who we love forever) at 7:30, 8:00, and 40:30.
2. An American Werewolf in London: Two American college students, David Kessler and Jack Goodman, go backpacking across the Yorkshire moors. They come across a bar with many friendly locals, but when they comment on a pentagram on the wall, everybody becomes gruff and curt with them. The boys leave, the locals tell them to stay on the road and watch out for the full moon. Guess what they do? The opposite of that, and a freaking werewolf attacks them, killing Jack and turning David into a werewolf. David ends up in a hospital in London, doesn't get any respect from the local constables, shacks up with the pretty young nurse Alex (Jenny Agutter), and goes on lupine killing sprees whenever the full moon pops out. What do we have here? Americans going to another country, pissing off the locals, not taking advice, sleeping with hot babes, and slaughtering everything in sight. Classic us, right? And did you know that the director of "Animal House" directed this one? That's probably why you can find nudity at 41:00, 1:20:00, 1:22:00, and 1:27:00. Happy July 4th, y'all!
