MTV Has A New “Docuseries” Called “Virgin Territory”

Like everyone else in the world, when I hear Virgin Territory, I think of that totally (not at all) awesome 2007 movie with Hayden Christensen. Right? Anyone? Regardless, MTV has co-opted that name, as is their wont, and has crafted what they're calling a "docuseries" about teen and 20-something virgins. 

As reported by The Wrap (link below), three of the show's stars are currently touring the country to promote the show and their lifestyle choice in anticipation of the show's premiere. 

The panel was made up of two women of faith in their early-20s, Dominique Sullivan and Lisa Youngerman, who are waiting for sex until marriage. They're joined by Alec Melger, 21, a gay man from a small Arizona town who can't wait to have sex.

So, two women who want to remain virgins and a guy that wants to lose it ASAP? That sounds like every college sex movie ever. What's groundbreaking about that?

I'll field that one. Nothing. There's nothing groundbreaking about that, but MTV hasn't done anything groundbreaking since they debuted The Real World 22 years ago. I also find it interesting that the gay guy is the only one not choosing to be a virgin. There's an analogy in there somewhere but it's not coming to me.

The series was born out of a partnership between MTV and the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. Sarah Brown was on the panel to bring her surveys and statistics to the conversation, such as “70 percent of those young people surveyed admired their peers for waiting.”

So MTV partnered with a company designed to prevent the very thing that's been their bread and butter for the last five years, pregnant teens? Jesus, the irony is so thick in here you need an aqualung to breathe.
