Are We Being Ageist To Madonna?

In case you didn’t realise, Madonna dropped her new music video, “Bitch I’m Madonna” in June and people are still talking about how inappropriate she’s being ‘at her age’. Yeah, yeah, Madonna is 56. Yeah, 56 and she looks better than most 25 year olds. I mean, have you seen some of us? Man we look rough! 

Just to be clear, the correct answer to my title question is, Yes. Yes we’re being ageist to Madonna. No doubt about it. Check out her video:

I mean, she looks amazing. If we didn’t know Madonna’s age, we wouldn’t question that this video is awesome. But we do, and suddenly she’s being inappropriate! Listen this video is everything awesome you want to happen on a wild night out. And in case you didn’t get it, it’s Madonna being tongue-in-cheek and ironic. 

But looking around online, comments I read about the video was that she was, “Trying too hard,” “Following not leading,” “Couldn’t even get the celebrities to come for the shoot in person,” “Sad,” and on and on it went. I mean, WTF?

I get that Madonna isn’t the age she used to be. That’s just how age works. Here’s what people forget, all that we see female celebrities doing now, and I mean all of it, it’s here now thanks to Madonna. She was the first true queen of ‘don’t-give-a-fuck-itis’, paving the way for all other female artists shaking their moneymakers in the videos. 

And you can be sure she doesn’t give a shit of what you think of her and whether or not she’s being appropriate for her age. I am totally into what she’s doing. When I get to 56 (and older) I wanna know that I can still be hot, sexy, talented and sexual! It’s as if when a woman turns 50 she should just retire all sexiness and turn into someone who is appropriately sexy ‘for her age’ when men can go around acting like sexual beings until they die. I mean seriously, Sean Connery was voted Sexiest Man Alive when he was 59!! 59!! That’s three years older than Madonna and people were voting him sexy and fuckable. 

So fuck everyone else Madonna. You stay relevant and do what you gotta do. Wear a grill, leopard print dress, drink too much and kiss all the boys. Who gives a shit?
