“Outlander” Showrunner Wants “Real Sex” Not “TV Sex”

Real Or Fake, As Long a Caitriona Balfe Is Nude, It Doesn't Matter

Cliché can make even the greatest of television shows or movies completely unwatchable. It’s the challenge of the producers and writers to come up with something the audience hasn’t seen or something we have seen but in a different way. For the amazing show Outlander, there was one thing that showrunner Ronald D. Moore wanted to make sure wasn't cliché TV: the sex scenes.  

Yes, Mr. Moore really didn’t want the sex scenes on Outlander to be the tired, old, worn-out sex scenes that you always see on television shows.  

‘We’re not doing TV sex. TV sex is not real sex. No one has sex like that.’  

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Outlander isn’t your typical television show, so why would it have typical sex scenes? Moore went to explain in more detail his reasoning for avoiding “television sex.”  

“What are we going to do this? What’s the story reason? It’s not just about getting to see them naked again, because we’ve seen them naked, and they’re hot. We get it.” 

Moore really wanted to show that the sex scenes weren’t simple there for something to look at. They were incredibly important to the story and the characters.  

“It’s very important for multiple reasons. For one thing, their's is a forced marriage. They were never intending to marry each other. She wasn’t intending to marry him. He married her mainly because he wanted to sleep with her, to protect her also. But the sexual attraction between them is very strong and is the glue that holds them through some very difficult times.”  

If you ask me, Moore, the cast, and the crew do a great job at “getting it real” when it comes to the sex scenes. Though, had they kept it fake, I think we would still love the sex scenes as long as Caitriona Balfe got nude.
